| 06/02/2003 07:51:24 PM | "sounds of silence"by helgihelgiComment: Well, I figured someone would enter something with this title, and I was right.
I do like the shot -- though some of that is I like cemetery shots in general -- and B&W in this case is a nice touch. I'm not sure how well I feel it meets the challenge; we could debate endlessly about if 'silence' is a sound, and I see merit in both sides. I may have to think about this and revisit the score later when I'm sure. And no doubt you will have jillions of comments saying just that.
About my only real technical objection is the overlight top of the photo, which gives it a washed out feel. |
| 06/02/2003 07:47:04 PM | Summer Funby DennisFComment: This is a neat shot with the motion-capture of the splash and the individual motes of water, but inasmuch as splashing does have a distinctive sound, there isn't that immediate gut 'sound' reaction to it. On topic but a little loose of interpretation, I'd call it. I like the, well, I was going to say B&W but it appears to have a very mild sepia tone to it, so, 'duotone', nature of the photo. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 06/02/2003 06:56:08 PM | Mackie 24.4.4by TarbiniComment: This is a very, very neat shot in terms of lighting and composition in general. Unfortunately, even though there's a belated connection to the topic in my mind, the initial impression was not of sound, but of light and shadow. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 06/02/2003 06:54:56 PM | EMERGENCY!!by RuchartComment: If the shot included obviously lit emergency lights, it would have had a bit more impact for me in terms of 'sound'; I am not certain if they just aren't on or if the lighting conditions keep it from being obvious. I do like the shot; it's a very crisp photo and framed well. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 06/02/2003 06:51:57 PM | Hand Drumsby shareinncComment: nice to see drums, first time I've run across them. Unfortunately like several other instrument images, static instruments without someone playing them does not do as much to evoke the concept of 'sound'. I do like the way this is set up, and the glow on the bottom left's hide. Can't tell what kind of drums the left ones are (tom-toms?), which I suppose is immaterial; I'm just naturally curious. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 06/02/2003 06:49:42 PM | D-minor, Mic's Viewby GeneralEComment: Hmm, seems a strange angle for a mic view, but okay. I like it's an action shot, though with a "D-minor" title I think I'd rather have seen the chording than the strumming. The lighting or angle or toning or likely all three washes out the strings, which is a pity as they're the center of focus. I don't actually care for the toning, actually. The idea is good. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 06/02/2003 06:47:54 PM | Wreaking havoc with new roommates!by RiderGalComment: I'm, erm, still not sure I understand the setup. It definitely evokes noise -- very nifty motion blur on the hammer, btw, although the resulting blur on the pot is a little hard to focus the eye on -- but the concept leaves me boggled. Not physically abstract but metaphysically abstract? Good lighting, too. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 06/02/2003 06:44:39 PM | Sizzling Morning Campfireby DougPazComment: Mmm. BaaaAAAAaaacon.
Take several shots? Half your bacon is nearly uncooked and half seems done, and there's a lot of grease. This is not as immaterial as it sounds; it seems less natural than it could.
I do, however, like the idea; bacon (frying things in general) has a very distinct sound, and the cast-iron pan on the grate is visually interesting, and oh my god that sounded pretentious. But 'pretty' isn't the right word, so, I'll stick with the old VI.
Did you eat the bacon after? | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 06/02/2003 06:42:42 PM | Compact Disc Digital Audioby SharQComment: The inner edge aside, the subject isn't immediate obvious. It's sort of pretty, in an abstract fashion, but I'm not a big fan of abstract. Since I had to stop and think, even for a few seconds, what this was, it lessened the topical impact for me. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 06/02/2003 06:41:45 PM | Pump Up the Volume!by nathaliedooComment: What a strange effect. I'm very curious how you did it.
I think the idea is a good one, but I dont' really care for this result; the patches of colour seem to be random artifacts rather than intentional, and the abstract feel lended as a result is, unfortunately for you, not something I care for. (Well, it may not be unfortunate; it's not like you were out to impress me specifically, but, er, okay, I'm getting sidetracked again, really must sleep more before writing these...) |
