Where the Flux is that Capacitor?by rodneygComment: Is that an HP-48SX? I have one of those... HP calculators are the best. RPN all the way baby! Oh yeah, about the photo... definitely shows one aspect of "design and engineering". But perhaps a bit too much stuff? Maybe focusing on just the calculator, notepad, pencil, etc? |

Clockworksby davidbedardComment: This is great subject matter for this challenge, but for me, it looks like too much post-processing has been performed. |

FireWater by dan_pendletonComment: Excellent shot Dan. I also ranked this one highly. I really like the lighting contrast between the table and the background, very nice technique. Although the tilt of the table is slightly distracting, the ring (of flammable liquid?) around the bottle was a little more distracting. But nonetheless, it is an outstanding concept and very well executed. Congrats on the ribbon! |

Gotta light? by kiwinessComment: Congrats Gary on a terrific shot -- definitely one of my favorites in this challenge. And thanks for sharing the details of how you accomplished it. Enjoy the rest of your stay in Mallorca! |

Growth Opportunity by EddyGComment: Thanks for all the comments everyone!
One of the hardest parts about this entry was coming up with a title for the shot. I submitted it with something "mundane" like "Keep on rollin'" (or something equally lame) and at the last minute, the much-better title "Growth Opportunity" just hit me.
For anyone interested, here is an "out-take" that shows an alternative composition I was considering:

Before Flashlightsby spydrComment: Very interesting subject matter, but unfortunately your attempt at removing the background in the upper left hand corner is very obvious and I think it ends up detracting from the picture. My other suggestion (since the theme of this challenge was "Fire") would be to focus on the region where the flame is instead of on the igniter. |

Hot Bath by Firstrich1Comment: Congrats on another ribbon Richard! I think you and your wife make a great team, considering all four of your ribbon-winning entries have had her as a large part of the composition! I like your composition here (except I might have tried a few shots with the candle behind her head in a different location) -- I tried doing a bathtub shot for the "At Rest" challenge and sort of fell flat. Considering how many DPC voters dislike the shallow DOF thing, you did really well, and, IMHO, it works in this shot. |

Touching Up my Shadow by BeagleboyComment: For the record, I disagree with jmsetzler. When voting, how do you know that the submitter didn't actually airbrush a shadow on to a wall and then set up the shot and take a picture? What if beagleboy "lied" in his "Photographer's Comments" and said exactly that: "I spent the better part of a day tracing my shadow on to the wall and then airbrushed on a dark shade of gray where my shadow would be so it could appear I was touching up my shadow." Would that have made this a better picture? Would you "know" that he wasn't telling the truth? Obviously doing it in "post" is easier, but so is handling your finances with Quicken instead of paper and pencil, or typing and spell-checking a paper in Word instead of using a typewriter and a dictionary. But using Quicken or Word is what you do in the 21st century.
As long as a photograph appears as though it could have been "taken straight from the camera", it most likely maintains photographic integrity in my book. Message edited by author 2004-02-09 08:17:25. |
