What a beautiful shot! I really like it.

I especially like the fact that the gentleman with the dog seems to be pointing to where 3.14159265358... would be on a clock face.

Nate...

Wrong attitude, my friend. And please don't take this as a lecture. I never lecture... just talk constantly!!

I know it hurts to think that those 18 people gave you such low scores, but if you offset those with the 16 who scored you 7 or above, then your 4s, 5s and 6s together, divide by three to get the average... and you get... 4.95. Hey... if all of those low scores and all of those high scores were to be thrown out... your score would be lower. Imagine.

Okay... soapbox is put away my friend.

Thing to do is try to figure out WHY they scored your picture low since they didn't see fit to give you a reason... and for 1,2 and 3 scores it asks for one, if I am not mistaken.

Your shot is well lit, clear as my last divorce decree and all in all... a great picture. But...

Rule of thirds.... I can see how this could be in play here... but maybe some couldn't. Many people score an entry low for not meeting the challenge. For me... since the Knight is actually UNnecessary since the Queen and Bishop have all possible Kingly moves covered... I would have let the Knight have the day off thereby you would have had a total of 3 pieces in the bottom third of the board instead of 4 pieces. See what I mean?

Most of the comments you DID get compliment on the picture. I wish I had that result on my last challenge. It is too bad the low-scorers weren't sure enough of their convictions to have left a message.

If it is any consolation... if I had had access to a computer today, I would have scored it a 5.75...or a 6. Nice shot...obviously. A little off the challenge subject, but still close. But most of all... just not enough emphasis or drama shown in your picture.

Maybe if you had the King cowering in the corner while the other pieces were as close as they could bein their own square showing the intimidation they are throwing at the King...but that is just my addled brain thinking again.

Nice shot, Nate. But I do believe the overall score was probably justified.

Better luck next time!

Mike

Joe..
This is a wonderful photo. I know how you can wish "it wasn't on the web" because it makes you look vulnerable and weak. But in reality... it shows a part of all of us. We all have that look on the inside of us from time to time, even if it doesn't show necessarily on the outside.

As for the photograph itself... after working for so long in the photojournalistic field, I can tell you this...this is a perfect example of an 'open-ended photojournalistic photograph'. Photojournalism is the art of using a picture to tell a story. By open-ended I mean that your picture tells a complete story without necessarily giving the particulars surrounding the photograph. Anyone who looks at your photograph knows immediately that you are scared, feeling vulnerable and afraid of whatever is next. Only you and whoever you have told know WHY you are feeling this way, but this doesn't necessarily matter since the feelings you are feeling are right there in front of us.

Great photograph, Joe!!

Wish I had gotten the time to vote on this challenge. This photo would have been a jaw dropping, breath taking reason why I love this website.

This would have gotten a score of 9 from me. A superbly busy and completely filled shot with balance, clarity, rhythm and beauty.

Congrats on your ribbon! I will be waiting for your next entry!

I enjoy this photo. The colorization is perfect. I might not have made the photo quite as sharp or grainy appearing, but that is just me. Good job!
