Always Smiling (no matter what)by MarkComment: Always smiling (perpetual cheerfulness, good nature) isn't a habit so much as a personality trait. I guess there are some instances where constant smiling would become a habit (beauty contestants, game show hosts?) but it is really stretching the idea of a habit. Interesting idea. I don't care much for the execution. One knife or blade might have been sufficient. This is a bit of overkill. |

Overtimeby labudsComment: I like the eerie blue and the reed peeping out from the mouse. The smoke is a great touch. Well thought out, well executed. |

Because it's there.by moviemanComment: This isn't a very appealing arrangement. It just looks like a snap shot of an assortment of fast food trash. The colors are fairly harmonious. |

another kind of playgroundby boogieComment: I don't see this as depicting a habit so much as a habitat. This is this child's environment, apparently, but it isn't revealing anything about habits accept maybe a habit of littering. Your title might be throwing me off here. It's a great photo, if a bit too contrasty. Great composition. There just isn't enough detail in the boy's face or skin. |

Little White Liesby tryals15Comment: There are an awful lot of jaggies in the shadow areas and weird white speckle things on her hand. There is a marked lack of contrast in the tones. Interesting crop. Original idea and it is certainly a habit. |

Alone and Reviledby jmritzComment: This is a nice candid portrait. I wish you could have eliminated the reflections on the glass behind her. I think cropping out the door handle would have made this much better. It would still be obvious that she is outside a public place. I'm giving this a 7. |

Twice a Dayby dahvedComment: This is kind of a weird perspective. The clock looked distorted and odd until I realized you shot from quite a bit below. I don't know much about Cuckoo clocks so I'm not sure what the arm is doing or what the significance of twice a day is. I can't decide whether the blurry arm makes this a better photo or bothers me. This really isn't to my taste. |

Forever chasing rainbowsby MotoCycleBoiComment: Cool photo. Hobby, passion maybe...habit no. The jagged phone line in the top left corner should have been cropped out. I'm feeling like the sky and the trees in the background are a bit too dark but I do like the contrast of the white beech tree against the darker trees and the sky. |

CURIOSITYby MIN-BITERComment: Huh? Don't get even remotely how this depicts curiosity, which isn't even a habit but a state of being. Photographically, it's okay but kind of fuzzy.
Edited: Since you found my comment mocking and unhelpful, which I truly did not intend, I decided to ammend it somewhat, for clarification.
I do not see the connection between a hand clutching at nothing and curiosity. If this were a challenge entitled "Curiosity", I would still think it failed to meet that challenge. As it is, it is a challenge entitled "Habits". I do not agree, as you insisted in your angry private message to me, that curiosity is a habit, but rather a characteristic of human, and other higher animal species', nature; a state of being. One is curious, one is creative, one is easygoing. These are things we *are*, as in the verb 'to be'. A habit is something that we do; an action of some kind that is performed repeatedly, consciously or not (for instance, we can be in the habit of daily grooming and still be conscious of what we are doing).
Asthetically, the composition is fine. I generally don't care for thin, inside borders but in this instance I like how you made it seem as though the hand is breaking through. I found that the image was fuzzy and lacking detail. This may have been an intentional asthetic choice, as you stated in your message, but it does not work on that level for me. My opinion, of course. |

BIG MEOWby yahshadaComment: This is a really unflattering and unpleasant view of this poor cat although kind of amusing. At first I didn't like it but on second viewing I've changed my mind. I had a thought that it would look much better in black and white so I downloaded it and converted it to grayscale and I was right. Much more striking and appealing. You should try it out.
I'm guessing the habit is meant to be the cat using the scratching rope. I call that instinct not habit. While I'll concede that individuals of higher functioning animal species can have habits, claw sharpening is something all felines do. My recently deceased cat had an endearing habit of sleeping on papers and open books. His mother had a habit of tapping paper suspended in air with her paw as if she was dribbling a ball. I'm not talking about paper someone would hold out for her in play. She would come across a piece of paper hanging over the edge of a desk or book or something and then start tapping it. It has to be seen to be understood. Too hard to describe. Anyway, the point is these are individual idiosyncracies whereas, claw-scratching is instinctive and neccessary to the cat. I upped your score because I think it's a much better shot than when I initially looked at it but you still lost a point because I don't think it meets the challenge. |
