Interesting - let's say 'arresting' approach; after a while looking, I have to say I don;t quite think it succeeds - perhaps simply because its subject is too plain, so that, even rotated, it's plainly just a bunch of row-houses turned through 90 degrees. The point is, it absolutely feels like a posting mistake, rather than an artistic statement.

Interesting juxtaposition of tonality - the walls and the site background, making it difficult to be quite sure where the image ends and the site begins. I'm not sure the New Worlders won't think you're outside the challenge guidelines either - perhaps more urban than sub-. Excellent sense of composition though.

Like this, although the strange colouration possibly adds a sense of mistake rather than intent to it. The point is pretty nicely made too.

Not unpleasant, if slightly orthodox, exactly-what-you'd-expect kind of shot. I wonder if you might not have strengthened the tonality of the hanging leaves a little, they seem a touch washed-out for impact. Strong sense of composition, however.

You'll doubtless get a bunch of don't like the tilt comments: well, neither do I much. I think, along with what looks like pretty heavy handed processing in the shadows and around the mailboxes, it smacks of a desperation to add some drama - whereas, from the look of that street, the seperate avoidance of drama is what it's all about.

That's really right up the street, isn't it? There's always something slightly sinister about the suburban ideal of the neighbourhood, I think. You might usefully have tried to pull back some of the near-overexposure in the shot: might have enriched some of the deeper tones, and the sky, for a little more impact.

For all the slightly clumsy composition - the overlap of the dog and the child, and the dynamic of the figures that takes us straight out of frame - there is certainly something that speaks of suburbia here.

Jay mentions the first thing that struck me with this: the tonality straight out of the 1970s. Can't expect the digital children to understand that, I guess. It's all helped by the structure, and the lack of any of the impedimenta of the contemporary - where's the iPod, the cell phone, the PSP? - and the plastic-looking glass speaks of that 60's 70's shock of the new thing - as does the melamine-looking table and the scratchy man-made material feel of that bench seat. It could be the corner of some quiet road-side diner somewhere, and you'd have to bet that those kids have just seen some big-finned brand new motor car pulling up outside.

All that, and it's beautifully composed. They have their own stories going on here, but actually it's the impetus to imagine the surrounding family life that entrances.

beautifully done, my friend; perhaps a little dominant in the mid-greys for my eye, but that's personal. I always have a slight concern about an element of making fun of people in these kind of shots: there's a temptation to think your intention is akin to 'look at his weirdo, hahaha!' - something I get very strongly from Diane Arbus for instance - a lack of sympathy. I'm not quite sure where this stands, but in the end I think he's just having too good a time by himself for that to be an issue. The spillage/staining down his leg pushes things the other way. Properly interesting and thoughtful photograph though, all the same. Fine indeed.

POSH - !! Bizarre, and intriguing. I find all sorts of ancilliary dualities after looking at this for a while ...
