|-| by jdannelsComment: I realised today that this is one of my three real favourite images on this site; three that I consider great works, in a universal sense: that means compared with every photograph I've ever seen.
To reply to Don's comment: it's precisely because you cannot rationalise, because even you cannot rationalise this image, that it is great. It goes beyond words, beyond the facility of words, and is therefore pure photography. How would one describe this to someone? You wouldn't, you'd have to just show them, no? |-| by jdannelsComment: Oh this is proper damn photography. It is entirely normal, humdrum, absolutely the ordinary moment; and yet a simple sense of timing, good fortune (though it still requires skill to see it and publish it) or grace produces this, and that normality is suddenly the extreme. Beautiful stuff. |

Early Manby RulerZigzagComment: You know, if this was a Robert Mapplethorpe photograph its connotations would be entirely different. The simple visibility of background prevents it being such, however. Oh, and the banana. It's more an indictment of dpc that this seems simply simplistic and even a little ... I don't quite know the word: unsympathetic, dystopian perhaps. I wish I didn't see a a certain crassness in it - I mean, the banana for heaven's sake - but I'm afraid I do. I'll be very very interested to see where this rates: its actually a true assessment of style versus content. |

Gathererby zapgrafxComment: It took me a moment to connect the field with the farm/factory/storage facility thing. Which makes the link 'humanity', and which in turn makes for an interesting subject - all 'humanity' being interesting, naturally. The edge light on the plants is perhaps a bit camp, but there's also a certain sense of 'red weed' that makes for interesting allusions. |

Dark Questionsby gtjewellComment: Ominous title; and ominous clouds to go with it. The repetition of the diagonals is quite effective - edge of building, line of cloud, angle of bird's wings. Enough grace, compositionally - enough real sense of finesse? I'm not quite convinced, I'm afraid. |

• Interrupted •by Bear_MusicComment: Given the very basic composition, and the contrasty light here, one is tempted to think this is simply about the missing rings on the ladder. Yet the angles of the composition make me wonder if there isn't more to it. I'm not sure what, though. Maybe that's me, and maybe it isn't there ... |

No Road Homeby bleuComment: Interesting shot; has a hazed, kind of polaroid feel, especially with that red saturation. The white thing - house? home, even? caravan? - almost looks like a smple imperfection. |
