| 04/11/2003 04:00:25 PM | Pi = Circumference = Photographby Silver FoxComment: Very interesting artwork, and the tire serves as a good example for the equation. More interesting lighting would really make this image stand out; it is quite unusual and engaging. |
| 04/11/2003 03:59:04 PM | My Pi(e) are squared.by camelotnorthComment: Clever and fun. I like the play on words. With this low point of view, you are still able to communicate the squarness of the pie. I kind of wish it were all in focus, though, or that the DOF could be even more out of focus, except for one spot. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 04/11/2003 03:56:39 PM | Play doh Piby CreativeFlyPhotoComment: Colorful and engaging, this is almost like a celebration of pi's birthday! I wish the whole thing were in focus, though. i like the detail of the paper: nice touch. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 04/11/2003 03:55:24 PM | Mountain Bike Mud Piby karmatComment: A fun, graphic macro shot. I'm a little confused as to how, exactly this meets the pi challenge: if it is the roundness of the bike tire (pi deals with making circles as you know), it might be better to show us it circularity. The shocks and machinery of the bike also communicate pi in a subtle way: they kind of make up the symbol of pi. your sharpest focus is on the mud; I'm not sure if that is the most significant place to look. A lot of drama in this photo! | Photographer found comment helpful. |

I concur with all of the compliments below! This is a fine image that meets the challenge well. I see in this image a pattern that intrigues me, made even more engaging with three elements: the overall color of the photo, the low--almost haunting--lighting, and the single solitary light bulb near the center. So now I have a puzzle to figure out with these three outstanding elements. the single light bulb suggests to me that the person in that room is alone. The overall color suggests that the person is not only alone, but in a particular mood, which is very emotional--suggested by red--but elusive to me. The low light suggests that the person is not very happy. Adding the title now helps enhance this feeling of deep loneliness.
Okay, if I got all that right and that is what you were aiming for, this is more than what a cursory look while voting can get, and yet this cursory look is what most voters probably do. Also, if my assumptions are correct, you've succeeded in communicating what you wanted to communicate. If they are not correct, you may want to evaluate just what it is you DID want to communicate and see how you could be more clear. If they were not correct, you can ignore what I have below, too.
To enhance this feeling of loneliness, you may want to try getting closer to that single light bulb. That's where the all the drama is and that is where we must look if we are to understand what's going on here. A little closer, or even much closer would give it more focus and pull us in to this story. You'd still want to see much of the building; you've chosen well to show it all dark except for that light, but I think you could get closer and make your focus/point clearer. I see no problem with your focus or depth of field, and I also enjoy the off kilter look to the image. Dark photos taken at night (presumably) will be grainy, and I think the grain works well for you here, adding an immediacy to your communication.
Nice work! Keep it up. Looking at your other images, you seem to have a sense for this kind of "storytelling." Best of luck for the future!

I'm sure you've read your comments below, and I agree with all of the compliments. It would appear that this excellent image perhaps did not comply with the challenge to some members. Too bad, because this is a fine image.
As I noted below, pet images don't usually thrill me unless creative and done exceptionally well, like yours. Through wonderful lighting and point of view, you've captured the essence of this cat very well. I think the extreme brightness of the white augments this view and enhances the idea that the cat is lounging around in the sun.
The point of view is unusual, creative and very effective at showing us the personality of this cat, and perhaps all cats. You also have very soft lines here, which add to the peacefulness and wonderful lazy feeling.
Exceptional work! Thanks for letting me look.

| 04/11/2003 02:34:23 PM | Old Indian Gourdby BitzComment: Greetings from the Critique Club!
As you've shown in your other photos, you have great skill at establishing mood, and you do that here. I'm sure you've read the comments below, and I concur with all of their compliments. The lighting and background you've used in this image establish a mood that, to me, take this object and turn it into a symbol of an entire culture perhaps. It becomes far more than a gourd in my view, as you've placed it in the center with an unearthly background. It certainly complies with the Symmetry Challenge, too.
It is a soft image with pleasing and engaging colors, lines and designs. All of these things add up to a very effective communication. I really enjoy how the designs almost blend into the gourd as if they are a part of it: your lighting, again, accomplishes this well. Someone noted the two white spots on the front of the gourd, and they are a tad distracting, but they also show us that you are following the rules, as they are easy to remove with spot editing!
The framing and cropping are superb, too. Thanks for a very well done image! Best of luck to you in the future!

| 04/11/2003 01:20:04 PM | Lemons and Orangesby BigSmilesComment: Greetings from the Critique Club!
You have several comments below, and I agree with most of their ideas. More in depth: your image is creative and refreshing. The colors and tones you've created work well, and they certainly comply with the challenge.
When I look at your image, I see lemons and oranges in geometric shapes, and so my mind is transported past the fruits and to science and math, perhaps even how even fruit can stand as a symbol for the essence of the math and science all around us. I think this connection could be even more enhanced with more dramatic lighting, either direct or indirect to increase the mood and suggest that there is more here than just oranges and lemons.
Your cropping and positioning of the objects in your frame is well done; I'm glad that it's not exactly centered. The focus is just a bit off, when I think that sharpness is required here.
This is a fine image, and I'm happy to see some interesting and new ideas represented in this challenge.
Best of luck!

You've received a lot of good comments below. I'll just add that I like this shot a lot. This takes my mind and feelings to the intricacy of music, as well as the technical aspects of it, so it makes my mind go beyond the photo and on to other things: to me a sign that it's a really good shot!
With this in mind, what makes this image work for me is the lighting and the the point of view. The lighting is moody and unscientific and helps us get to the point that music is a communication of images, perhaps, and not just scientific notes played into the air. The point of view shows us a glimpse (and "glimpse" is the right word here as your cropping is also excellent) as to how the magic of music happens.
Someone noted the brightness of the keys at lower left, and that may or may not be true. I don't think it detracts, but I think that you need the 3-D of the keys.
Beautiful shot and well executed. Creative and refreshing idea.
Thanks,
