Oh wow, just read through the comments, and only just noticed the woman reaching out for the heart. But she's so there! | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 06/12/2007 02:23:03 PM | Nick (edit)by purpleflutterby13Comment: Weell... I think the editing improved it a lot - the shadows are more interesting, there's no distracting white patch of light to the left on his cheek, and the eyes totally make the image stand out.
At the same time, I think it could be done better - I tried to make up for inexpert meddling with layers and cloning on his left cheek by doing a Gaussian to get rid of uneven patches, and as a result, the skin has a smooth processed feel, whereas a bit more natural texture would improve it a lot. Also, whilst I do prefer the eyes to be sharpened a lot, at the moment you can see traces of oversharpening (particularly in the higher res versions). Though I guess that one could be sorted out with a bit more editing time.
Overall, yes, I'm happy with it, but I think I can do better. But hey, it's all a learning experience :) |

The world is interesting, you drift along, go with strange angles and harmonies of shapes, and end up with shots like these. Great picture - wonderful spontaneous facial expression, quirky leading lines in the background, interesting angle. Shots like these only seem to arise by accident, and only if you're open to them. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

And, ok, this is more for my sake than yours: the post-processing looks gorgeous, I'd love to know exactly what you did. As far as I can tell, along with standard adjustments, you burnt the shadows and dodged the highlights to bring out the the texture of his skin, used Neat Image to make the skin look smoother, and had a soft light layer with black and white painted to shift the light (with slightly reduced opacity + Gaussian to make the lines less obvious?).
But anyway, well done, that is very cool. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

I can't believe how low this scored actually - the title really works, the composition has a nice harmony to it. and the left umbrella has those nice interesting shapes and sunrays shining through it. Sub-5?! Whatever. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
