I can't imagine how long it took to set up this shot. An extra point for effort and bumping to an 8.

Hello from the Critique Club,

I like the action of this image a lot and I gave you a 5. By the comments you received, you have a good understanding why the image scored as low as it did. By your comments, I understand that the effect was intentional. What I don̢۪t understand is if the blur was from post processing or from moving your camera when you shot the photo. I̢۪m thinking it was a bit of both but I̢۪m really not sure. I do agree that you could crop a little off the right side, as the composition would be stronger if the child wasn̢۪t centered in the image.

Food for thought, you might want to use a slow shutter speed and pan with the subject if you decide to shot another image like this one. This would still produce the moving dynamics in the background that you desire yet provide the in focus area the voters desire.

Send me a PM if you have any questions regarding this critique.

Hello from the Critique Club,

I like the action of this image a lot. You have a good eye for capturing action as it unfolds. Obviously from your score, there is room for improvement with this image. There are two major elements that are negatively affecting your entry in this challenge. First, the faces of the players are not as sharp (in focus) as the voters at DPC like to see. Not knowing what software you have or what post processing steps you used, I downloaded your image and used USM twice [1 radius, 100 strength, and 5 clipping], once before processing and once after I tweaked a few things. This seemed to help the sharpness considerably. The second issue is that both players seem to blend into the trees in the background. This can be corrected by using levels [RGB increase gamma to 1.33, decrease red channel output to 225 from 255], saturation [Increase 25], and Contrast/Brightness [+10 each]. If you would like to see the image I tweaked, let me know and I̢۪ll be glad to add it to this comment.

Send me a PM if you have any questions regarding this critique.

Hello from the Critique Club:

For what it is worth, I rated this image as 6. Although the pose looks like the bird is gliding, the blurry tips of the wings indicate that it was actually flying. So for that it definitely meets the challenge. This image does have a few technical issues, some of which are mentioned in the comments from the voters. First, the image lacks any kind of detail to hold the viewers attention. Part of this is due to photographing a black subject against a gray sky. The gray sky has no details to highlight and being significantly lighter than the main subject makes it difficult to capture detail in the bird. What little detail is there is not very sharp (like the beak). You might want to wait to use USM until after you have resized your image, as some detail is lost during resizing. Another alternative is to use USM before and after resizing and if things start to look a little odd after the last USM operation, reduce the strength of USM to 50 to 70 instead of 100.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Hello from the Critique Club:

This was a very interesting concept for the Bits and Pieces challenge; however it was a bit risky, as voters could easily think that it wasn't done with basic editing if they didn't take the time to see that it was validated. In general, there are a couple of technical things that would have made this image stronger. First, the wide-angle perspective of the background image makes it look like the horizon isn't level. This could have been fixed prior to printing the image. Second, you might want to reduce the noise in the background image a bit. The noise doesn't match the sharpness of the chalk, which weakens the effect you were trying to achieve. Lastly, the child's toy directly behind the chalk looks like it should have better focus considering how close to the chalk it is located. I'm not sure how difficult it would have been to clone this out before printing but it would have been worth the effort.
