Watching the Sun Bakeby dahkotaComment: Now THAT is where I really would rather have been. Nice B&W. Nice soft grass, a tree truck without thorns to lean on, a reasonable temperature and plenty of shade to choose from. Add a couple beers and it would be perfect. ;) - Steve |

"He should have been here by now"by GinaRothfelsComment: Interesting interpretation of the challenge topic. Can't say they all look enthusiastic about searching for stdavidson, but it works.
Wished I'd have went up and talked to a few people when I was missing. That could have saved folks a lot of time, effort and worry. - Steve |

South of Eden, of course!by hahn23Comment: Nice, majestic portrait oriented landscape. This image reminds me of a favorite hiking place in Oregon for both my son and myself. This looks like our view of Moraine Lake from a mountain called South Sister near Bend, Oregon USA. I was communing with nature in my absence in an equally spectacular area albeit of a much different environment. Beautiful picture. Looks like a fantatic place to hike. - Steve |

Steve who ?by gocComment: Nicely capture! The soft green background is very nice. It is of interest to note that Arizona is a mecca of riparian activity. It has an incredible variety birds. They are everywhere. For example, few people know that Arizona is the hummingbird capital of the USA with 15 varieties. While I was missing birds were my constant companions. - Steve |

Dreaming of waterby lastefComment: Yup, I did dream of water... especially enough water to take a dip in. :) Fortunately monsoon rains left enough standing water such that with some effort I could locate and collect enough to drink about a gallon of water each day and that made all the difference in the world. I resorted to water collection in the late afternoon and early evening so that I could place it above ground in tree branches to allow it to cool off during the night. Then each day I drank it early in the day before it got too hot. - Steve |

For your consideration!by graphicfunkComment: Curious composition. This is certainly a different interpretation of the challenge theme. I might as well have been hibernating a giant egg. I see I'm incubating a new canon to replace the the old Sony F717 I used to have. ;) - Steve |

He MAY have been taken by the living treesby GnarfComment: Interesting you would chose to keep the tree in sharp focus and leave the waterfall behind out of focus. You usually find it the other way around. Though I spent most of my time in wilderness or national forest service land there were few trees as we know them and therefore very little shade. I was saved by the State tree of Arizona, palo verde. It provided enough shade to shield me from the strong midday sun. - Steve |

Low tideby Rino63Comment: The "rules" say that a horizon should not be across the center of a landscape. But that is only a guide. It all depends on the scene and where the main interest lies. In this case there is interest both above and below the horizon line that makes a center arrangement appropriate in this case. You will want to experiment with varying the position of a horizon in a frame to see its effects and decide or yourself what is best for a particular picture.
It appears your focus is set at infinity making the background clouds sharp but leaving the near foreground slightly out of focus. To avoid this you can try refocusing to make the central focal point closer, say slightly closer than the nearest waves. Then depth of field will still keep the background clouds in focus but will extend forward to keep the near forground sharp as well.
I was lost in a desert but a lot of people included bodies of water in their depictions. Those are certainly places I wanted to be, for sure. :) - Steve |

Color of Natureby thordurbComment: Captures a lot of different ground colors from different minerals. This is common in arid areas like the places where I was lost. An issue for me when collecting water, even immediately after rain, was that ground minerals gave water a mineral taste. All water in southern Arizona has a high mineral content even after treatment. I worried that I could get something like mercury poisoning from it, but fortunately suffered no ill effects. There were a lot of plants where I was so it did not look as stark as this scene. - Steve |
