Nostalgia in Stoneby jbolingComment: The graphic impact of this image is very fun. This collection of statues makes for a great composition. I don't know if you manipulated the colors or not, but I like the way it works here. It has the feel of a BW image, but the sepia-yellow tints add warmth. It also has great range from black in the background to the whites in the nearest bust. The highlights appear to be a little blown on the nearest, but I think that adds to the feel of the image. OVeral, lighting is very good. The only thing I would prefer changed in this image would be to crop out the marble statue bases at the bottom (or shoot from a slightly different angle to exclude them). Not a big deal, but the harsh geometric lines of the bases clash with the curves, forms , and textures of the statues (in my perception, anyway). I'm giving this image a 10 because it has WOW factor! Nice job and good luck in the challenge. I hope to see this shot do well.

Reviving Friendships at the Playgroundby alanfreedComment: This has the feeling of 'snapshot', but the emotion portrayed on the girls' face makes up for it. I find the fence a little distracting... In the future, it may help to 'plan' your background, as much as you plan the subject matter!
Nice shot and good luck in the challenge...

Back to Schoolby hortopthComment: A very cute portrait! I like the use of BW here, and the composition is excellent. I like your low view point... Many people just shoot from their own height, which takes away from a child portrait, IMO. You did a great jog of getting at his level, and the portrait reflects 'his world' rather than him from an adult's perspective. A subtle change in technique that drastically changes the quality of a child's portrait! I don't know how difficult it would be to do in this setting, but a little more light on his eyes would give this some WOW factor. I love the look of concentration on his face, and I like the motion blur of his hand. As a result of getting the hand motion, you also got a little blur in his hair... very difficult to control, especially with small children as your subject (I have three boys 1, 3, and 5 years old). Nice shot and good luck in the challenge!

Hi K-Rob,
No, I did not know you had a Garden of the Gods shot at the time! But since I got a 4th, i think I'll look through your portfolio for some more shots to 'copy'. This one worked out well, so I'll trust your judgement and follow your lead again! LOL

Stairway to Heaven... Fallen Figherfighters Memorialby smellyfish1002Comment: Originally posted by magnetic9999: this was one of my top shots. great composition and imagination! |
Thanks Kollin,
I was trying to get it dark enough for the clouds to appear like smoke from a fire, yet still have some blues and whites. It was a tough balancing act, and I got quite a few comments about it being dark and lack of details on the sculpture. I intend to go back and shoot this some more, I just don't know if I will get a great sky like this again!
Thanks for the vote of confidence!

Teachers Anticipationby A WeaverComment: This is my favorite shot in the challenge! So many shots are concepts based on the children's point of view (not to mention a few animals). I like your thought process of the teacher's perspective... Black and white is a great choice for this image. Composition follows the rule of thirds in several instances. I also like that whe is reflected in the window. My favorite sister in law looks very much like this girl! Amazing similarity... Nicely done and I give it a 10. Good luck in the challenge!
