The Captainby FalcComment: Oh my! It is those arresting eyes and the lines on the face that just expresses volumes on the life of a fisherman. Gazing upon this portrait, I look upon the chiseled features that speak of life out at sea and I see a man/a captain who has sailed out on the fickle & sometimes harsh waters and returned. Wonderful capture, I sit here and I can almost think I can turn the page to read the National Geographic story that goes with this picture:-) |

steamby arngrimurComment: I can't quite express exactly why I find this composition powerful. Mayhap it is because of the silhouettes of the people walking off in the distance and that winding curving path. It is so symbolic of walking the path of life and going off into the horizon which holds a great unknown. The muted colors of the blue skys, the grey earth, the white steam compliment that thought because I think they act as veils covering the future from view. We don't know if vibrant bold hues signifying good times or dark & dreary colors siginifying rough & difficult times will great us as we walk that path towards the future. I cannot offer any critiques that point to any flaws or improvments needed in this photo. |

Low Tide, Sunrise — Nantucket Soundby Bear_MusicComment: Love the vibrant hues of this sunrise over the water. Composition is wonderful especially the boats on the water. This composition really gives the viewer a sense of waking up to a calm, quiet, and beautiful morning on the shores of Nantucket Sound. This picture is a lovely place to take a stroll. |

Postcard from Swedenby elee3009Comment: I really love the colors, textures, and composition of this photo. I don't know exactly why but I think of the book Cannery Row (which is set mainly on a fishing town and it's docks). Perhaps it is the wooden barn/boathouse with all the accoutrements of daily life in and around it. The nettings, tarps, ladder, the hose, the great circular tub, and even the table and three white chairs ALL capture a feel & 'culture' of daily life that exists at this location. Wonderful photo. |

Cactus Sunsetby howzitComment: Simple shapes and colors. Very visually appealing to the eye. The bold and vibrant colors of yellows, reds, and a touch of purple along with the silhouettes of the cactus really give the viewer a feel of being there and observing the desert sunset. |

Night Liteby Resusit8uComment: Love the smokey colors of the the orange and browns. Really sets a mood for the light that shines through a dark and errie night. Two critiques on this piece. The first is that there is a tad too much negative space on the top of this photo- cropping 20% off and zooming in more on the lighthouse & it's environment would improve the composition because it would make the lighthouse more prominent. Second, the main body of the lighthouse is illuminated wonderfully but the beacon light at the top is almost overpowering to look upon. Toning down the starburst pattern of light emulating from the lighthouse would be an improvement. |

Contemplationby trnqltyComment: Overall this is a great composition! I LOVE the position of the elements not to mention the poise of the model and he sits there holding the football and contemplating on a past game or a game about to be played (and I am not a big fan of watching sports:-) ). The expression on his face is perfect - he is lost deep in thought and the viewer knows that it is because he is getting his "head in the game". Lighting and B&W tones are spot on and fantastic on this photo. My only critique on this photo is that you could have cropped it closer. The building in the background behind him does nothing for the overall composition - it is a distraction. You want to keep the focus on your main subject which is this football player lost in thought. |

the magic carpetby gliphixComment: Love the rich warm tones of the golds, oranges, and reds! It really projects a warm summer day spent in the ocean. Love the silhouette of the surfer and the golden ball of the sun as it sinks into the ocean waves. My only critique, and a little one at that, is that the mind fills in the blanks for us - we know he must be on a surfboard but it is not prominently visible. He appears like he is leviating on the surface of the water. If the shape of the board were more visible than it would improve the composition. |

All that remainsby SimonjwComment: At the end of the day all that remains is the reminents of man's creation. I think that this composition really does well to capture the mood of the passage of time and that what man creates does not stand up to the test of time. Because, eventually, the tides of time come and wash away what once was. Once there was a dock here - life teemed here with men making their way to this dock to fish and/or perhaps just contemplate. But it is no more - only the foundation - the bones remain and eventually they too will be swept away. Wonderfully composed picture. |

Futureby dleachComment: Love the vibrant hues of green and the variety of foliage in the shot - really makes an impact in the composition because I think spring and renewel which plays well with the title of the piece. I like how you used the columns to naturally frame the futuristic glass building seen in the background. It is that framing that really complements the main focus the futuristic glass building surrounded by nature. |
