I knew this shot wouldn't do well with the DPC crowd (not a criticism of the reviewers, just a matter of personal tastes) because of the "over-processed" HDR. I decided to submit it anyway. I am typically not a fan of that look myself, and I'm the first to admit this doesn't look realistic. But why does everything have to? What I get from this is a sort of post-apocalyptic, end of the world feeling, and the processing was necessary for that. A more conventionally processed image might be a nice picture of a dead tree, it just wasn't what I was trying for here. I didn't want just a dead tree, I wanted something where you were looking for some radioactive mutant to be peering out from behind it.

I think the softness and the noise make the image. It sets a mood. If it was perfectly sharp, I wouldn't like it nearly as much.
