Good idea if you could of pulled it off. Nothing appears to be in focus. The focal point must be behind the dog. This leads me to believe this was a chance encounter and the preset didn't allow for the sudden loss of light and overexposed the background. Perhaps a different title like "what can ruin a great photo". Even recreating the moment to try to get a better shot is difficult, especially with animals. They rarely cooperate.

Sometimes DOF is hard to capture in a macro. I find it difficult to locate the exact focal point or pehaps it was washed away by the harsh lighting of the flash.

nice idea. Image looks extremely pixelized. Lacks DOF. Flash or lighting spot in eye with reflection of camera is not a good thing. If this was a large pic to begin with, maybe compression is hurting it.
