Don't be discouraged. I often get disappointed that a shot doesn't score higher when I realize how much went into the shot. The observer doesn't automatically realize this aspect of a shot.

Probably people were responding to the lack of "individual feather detail". Not that that is bad, but my guess is it was what people wanted to see.

I think the saturation looks alright here. You probably do have the reds to the right and above the bird's eye saturated, but it doesn't appear to blow out any detail (unless there was some there previously) and so I think it's ok. I think you did a good job pushing it to the edge, but not going over.
