Reflection on the apple itself is harsh (try a polarizer? that looks like daylight reflection, not flash), and the face seems slightly soft (try one stop smaller aperture), but the expression and story make up for it. Background is interesting without being distracting.

Holy glistening mucous, Batman! Fascinating colors and textures, and an amusement point for the hungry horse.

Behind Every Great Orange . . .

With the thin orange slices, you missed a "grate" pun, that would have gotten you a bonus point from me, and probably negative points from everyone else. :)

Good use of basic colors, and the angle, which frequently bothers me in other shots, works well here. Reflections mar the scene somewhat (try a polarizer?).

Interesting arrangement and lighting. I'm very curious to find out how you got an apple logo where it is, particularly transparent, flat, and upside down relative to the wineglass (a stained glass decoration, selectively desaturated?). A technical perfection bonus is marred by the harsh reflected light on the apple (very difficult to avoid, though).

Laughter gets you a bonus point. The bright blue table seems a little harsh, though, (try dark green instead?) and the apple seems slightly out of focus, like you focused on the board and didn't have enough range to reach it. Try tripod-mounting, and shooting at a higher aperture (f/11 should probably do it).

You get a bonus point of interest for the awful, awful pun. Image seems out of focus, however, and the grey background doesn't really match the fairy tale theme, somewhat breaking the effect. It's a pity you couldn't arrange for some kind of mock table or bedroom.

Let's Roll !

Comment:
Image is out of focus, seems slightly posterized, and has dark shadows that drop off too severely into black. The reflected highlight on the knife is also very harsh, and seems blown. The colors on the blade are somewhat pretty, but the colors on the handle are very odd, and the green at the left looks like fungus. Try a different angle to avoid the reflection, which is causing the extreme dynamic range hurting this image in both directions. If the title had been about the reflected light, drawing the interest to the colors, the image might have been more interesting, but as it is, it isn't really memorable, and the light just looks like an artifact of the reflection error. An apple and a knife on a counter alone isn't a very interesting image.

Blown highlights glare harshly at the right and at the bottom. Try using spot metering, and underexpose the image (or better, until you get a feel for it, bracket exposures by taking several shots with different settings).

Not enough draws the eye to the main apple in the center, and the reflected light on it doesn't help the image. While the placement of it on a golden point is good basic composition, I might have chosen the lower left instead of the upper left to give more of a sense of "low hanging fruit". That's a minor artistic quibble, though, and could go either way.

I think this is from resizing, but even the central apple looks slightly soft to me. Try running a very, very slight resharpening on the image after resizing to compensate.

Don't be too disheartened by the low score. If you keep practicing, it doesn't take very long before the technical errors stop happening, then you just get stuck around 5 for a while while you figure out what kind of subjects the DPC crowd actually likes. :)

The reflected glare is very distracting, particularly being so front-and-center, but this is otherwise a fascinating image. Next time, try putting a screen behind you at an angle and bouncing the flash off of that, or possibly just trying a diffuser.

An interesting take on the challenge. The prominent seed is distracting, though, and mars the star.
