Ascensionby jmsetzlerComment: Greetings from the Critique Club.
Well John, another fine photo from you here. There's not much for me to say here except I think the right side was cropped too much. Even if it wasn't as much the subject I would have liked to see the edge of the staircase. Why? Because when my eyes follow the railing it just stopped at the border. It might be more visually amusing to follow the rail up with your eyes. I hope that made sense.
I really like the use of B&W here and the contrast as well. I wish there was more I could add but this is a very good shot that needs little improvement. Look forward to seeing your photos in future challenges. If you have any questions feel free to drop me an e-mail. |

Plain and Simpleby agwrightComment: Greetings from the Critique Club.
This is a very nice photo. The simplicity of it is what works for me. The color is nice and I really like the soft look of it too. I think I would change the border as it is a little awkward for me. Other than that it is a great photo and I can't think of a way to improve it. Good work and good luck in future challenges. |

Love under candle lightby jenaromComment: Nice soft lighting, I like the suggestiveness of the photo without showing everything. Good luck in the challenge. |

Friday Nightby DennisFComment: Greetings from the Critique Club.
After looking at this for a few moments I realized what the "after" is. Very clever. Too bad some people didn't get it during the challenge.
I think the thing that hurts the photo the most is the background. Ways to improve that would be to try and get something plain behind your subject. I think black felt material would work. I use a black fleece sweater sometimes. These materials tend to reflect less light and let your subject stand out more. I think your lighting here is ok, but some of the commenters suggest it being harsh or cold. I'm not a lighting expert but I think if you indirectly light the subject it will be less harsh to the viewers eyes.
Your focus is good and you could have blurred the limes out if you had wanted. Either way I think it would have worked.
Composition isn't bad. That may have been what confused voters though. Did you try a shot with all of the ingredients on one side of the frame and the Margarita on the other. That shot may have looked unbalanced but I think people would have gotten the "Before and After" aspect of it.
I think this is a good photo that could have done better if the lighting were softer and composition different. If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me. Good luck in future challenges.

WWII-B36by autoolComment: Even though it has no bearing on my vote I just wanted to let you know that the B36 didn't actually fly until about a year after the war. The Air Force received the bomber in 1948 and retired it 1959. |

Dear FHM magazine ...by d95vetteComment: This is a really well done photo and I don't see how this one deserves to be as low rated as it was. This is a technically flawless photo that has very cliche pose and look. Sorry it didn't do better but this is fine work compared to several photos that finished higher than yours. I hope this hasn't discouraged you, keep up the good work. Message edited by author 2003-03-08 04:49:39. |

Half Mastby boyte1Comment: This is a very nice photo. The border needs to be less distracting to me. |
