This would be a more successful shot if you could've been closer to the subject and used a shallow DOF to get the rider focused and blurred the background. The whole thing blurred doesn't really do it for me. The title is great though. We have guys like this driving around our little redneck town all the time.

Awesome panning shot. I've been trying to do this my whole life I think. Anything faster than my kid and I can't get it halfway focused. Awesome freeze motion shot. Very very well done! - 9

I can appreciate the hilliness of SF with this pic. But honestly I don't like the angle of this shot or leveling the shot to the trolley. I'd have like to seen this a little more from the front or back of the trolley, more like a 3/4 shot instead of a full side view.

Good perspective shot. I don't like how close the crop is on top. The other train in the background would be better if it were gone, but its not too major of a distraction. This engine though is a good find. Nice pic

THis looks like a shot from HOT ROD magazine minus a little professional touchup. The subject against the trees provides a nice contrast. If it were a little less shadowy it would be a little better. Nice car and nice pic

Composition - My first impression is that this is a tough, tough shot to pull off. My best picture of a fish was one that barely moved, ever. It was really stationary and it came out decent at best. I think there are 3 definite reasons why the composition of this photo didn't work as well as it could've. The first is the fish are facing the wrong way. If they were facing into the camera, add about one point. The tilting of the photo is not helping things either. I think that's strike 2. I see you apologized for it in the comments, but it doesn't help in the voting. You did pick a very worthy subject though. I've always like the color of these fish and how big they look with their front fins and kind of big heads.

Technical - The third strike is the focus. It's reasonably well focused considering the shutter speed was 1/30sec. This alone makes it tough to focus. Not to mention that the fish were probably moving. If you could've made this crystal clear, you could've added a little more to the score. The exposure is just right. The colors are very vivid. A very clear pic for ISO 320.

Overall - Fix those 3 problems and you have a very good photo. Easier said than done, I know from experience. In my own small tank at home, the last time I tried to photograph my fish, I put a 1000w light kit shining into the tank along with the normal fluorescent lights that are already there. It worked pretty well all things considered. So I think the flaws of this photo are pretty obvious, but not easily fixable. This is a tough one I know. good luck in your future challenges - Inspzil

Congrats on another ribbon Kiwiness. Thank god you didn't use your 5050 so the lowest score on the 5050 page is still in my range :) This was my only 10 of the week and I don't think I had a 9 either. Easily the best image in the field. Great pic, thanks for sharing it!

Composition - 2 things grab me about this picture right away - The framing of the bird and the nice reflection in the water that contrasts him so well. And I think even turning the contrast up a little more wouldn't hurt at all. It might make the bird stand out a little more even. The expression on the birds face is really good and I'm very fond of the way you used that in the title. Very nice job putting this composition together, including the title.

Technical - This is as well taken as I could hope for. The DOF is great as is the exposure and framing. The bird is in great focus. I might try to turn up the contrast a little more in PS to give a little more separation between the bird and the water, but really I think as is this is very well done.

Overall - Looking at your score, you got robbed. There is nothing super exciting about this picture where I'd say its in the top 10, but 5.5ish? Its a much better shot than that. I'd be more inclined to think its in the 6-6.4 range. This is really a nice shot and I have little to say about it, even as far as adding any suggestions. I really only think the thing I'd change about it the contrast thing. Aside from that I'd tell you to just leave it, it's a perfectly good pic. Nice work and I'm sorry we voting public didn't give this the recognition it deserved. Good luck and keep shooting - Bob

Composition - Most unusual field to find this horse. It gives it that WOW factor with the intense yellow in this photo. It makes for the horse in a pretty uniform background. I'm not so sure that it's the best contrast for the horse, but in terms of being original and different, it works very very well. The placement of the horse in the frame is very good. I'm not sure it wouldn't work anywhere in the frame though really. As far as horses as subjects, they are one of the most majestic creatures on earth and you don't see many bad pics of them. Great choice of subject in a very non-traditional setting.

Technique - Very well done, like always. The exposure, framing, and focus are all in very good order. DOF is great for this pic. I can't see the point of selective focus on this photo taken from this perspective. Nice work taking and editing this pic.

Overall - Just a great shot. Very well chosen and very well taken. The only thing that's been on my mind since I've been writing this is taking this pic so the horse is on the right side of the frame looking exactly as he does here and then flipping the image about the vertical axis. The reason I thought that is that if you put the horse with his rear at the outside of the pic and then have his head toward the middle, it might leave a little leading line from the outside into the center of the photo. It also might screw up a perfectly good pic. Maybe there's no good grounds for me saying what was on my mind, but I thought since it was there I'd share it. Congrats on a very nice pic Crab. - Bob
