I spent four years in State College and I'd just about swear the sky never got this blue when I was there. But I was not a Photoshop user then. It's a really nice shot. The colors and textures go well together.

Moonset

I found this to be a stunning shot. And I thought it deserved better treatment by the judges. Then I considered the proposition that the moon is too small to be a feature. In the sky this is not so big a deal. But in the water its proximity ot the rock draws power from the rock - which is otherwise a very powerful focal point of the photo. Then it occurred to me: now that the competition is over, why not try a version with the moon removed. The clone stamp in Photoshop would make this quick work. And you may end up with an even more strikingly beautiful photo. Just a thought - tell me if you do.

Water Song

The soft violet hues of a sky that's seen the day's last sun are the perfect complements to the incandescent oranges glowing in the fountain. Sometimes I think the shot would be better if the statue part got lost. And then I realize that in a strange and profound way the statue echoes the pool - it's got waves and it reflects the very same colors. And then I think the shot would be better if I saw just a bit more of the statue. Finally, after working through all that I think I like the shot pretty much as it is.

Very nice shot. The water is pretty; the light in this space is strongly atmospheric. Actually, it would be too dark, if it were not for the mirror. The mirror redeems everything.

Row Boat

Simple, clean, uncluttered. I like the way the fog blurs the margin between sky and water. I also like the tight composition, no space wasted.

Black is a tough color for a subject. The inside of the boat shows detail, and I think the stern of the boat does as well. But most of the hull does not. Such photographic 'blank space' will frequently suck the life out of a photo. What is interesting and a little distracting is that the reflection of the black surface in the water appears to allow us to see below the surface all the way to the bottom. But, frustratingly, there's not much to see there and our efforts seem wasted. This doubles this blank space, and now almost half of the photo is rendered uninteresting - the eye circles the picture in the margins.

In any case, it's good photo.

Okay, most of the photos that project pain on inanimate objects strike me badly. But the whimsy of this photo and its brilliant execution force me to make a considerable exception in this case. Nice job.
