The sun blasts the rest of the picture into darkness, but this works really well, giving it a subdued, calm, relaxing effect. The tyre tracks (if that's what I'm seeing) add artistic patterns that add to the overall effect. Great shooting. (9) |

| 10/03/2002 09:53:00 AM | white wine on clear glassby jjbeguinComment: This is a really nice shot overall, but I think that there are a few problems. Firstly, the coat on the back of the chair doesn't work within the context of the shot, in much the same way as the much darker area to the left that merges with said coat; these elements add unwanted conflict to the shot and contrast really strongly with the main subject. It's OK for the model to have the contrasting colour; but the other elements just pull the eyes away. Cropped out, I think this shot would be a lot better. Sorry to add more, but the other point relates to the models pose; it doesn't look natural – you can almost hear the photographer saying, 'No, left a bit more'â€Â¦ Sorry to be so negative. On the plus side, the rest of the shot works really wellâ€Â¦ (4) | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 10/04/2002 09:58:00 AM | Re-reflectedby simbambaComment: This is superbâ€Â¦ I love the whole concept of this shot; I didn't realise it was possible to pose just a hand, but I think you have done so really well. You have also captured the moment delightfully. What's also worthy of remark is the way the bin doesn't look transparent – until you look really closely. The composition makes the shot; the colours contribute to the balance and the lighting gives it a wistful feel. To get a shot like this, this good, personally, I'd have to resort to cheatingâ€Â¦ Great photographyâ€Â¦ (10) |
| 10/01/2002 10:13:00 AM | trapped and colorlessby heartsdivideComment: For me, this doesn't work. The use of black and white leaves the shot looking lack lustre, and the under exposed look simply darkens the image to a point where nothing can be discerned. Composition isn't bad, but having nothing to really call the central object (is it the screen or the reflection) makes it hard to call. The area at top right draws the eye away from the screen (and reflection) and there's nothing really there to look at. I'd try re-shooting the shot in colour and masking the negative space so that it does doesn't draw attention away from what is a potentially superb idea. Sorry to be so negative, but I don't like to score low and not say whyâ€Â¦. (2) |
| 10/04/2002 08:58:00 AM | The Gambit (on glass chess board)by oniComment: This is just superb – really like the lighting and composition. The reflection is subtle – I like that a lot. The darkness of the background has the effect of focusing all the power in the shot directly onto the subject making it really punch out – this effect is also enhanced by the use of the diagonal line – adding even more drama. Finally, to finish off, just a twist of backlight, and the cocktail is complete. The final mix produces one hellishly stunning shot... First class photography (10+++) |
