The lighting seems to harsh on the (brush?) If there is any way you can use multiple lights, lamps, etc... I think that would help to give the photo more dimension.

Very microscopic looking. This reminds me of my photo. I had a difficult time deciding how to crop it because the DOF is so limiting on the macro scale. I probably would have cut out the lower quarter of this photo so that the viewer isn't distracted by the OOF spikes on the lower left hand corner. I definitely think that would make it stronger.
