This is a great idea Yao. I really like the way you have combined these together, its an interesting and original concept that works well. What I feel would improve it is for the wood shavings to also be sharp. You have a plain black background so against that having everything nice and sharp would definitely improve its impact. |

A great image Marcel, strength in its simplicity. The repeating patterns of the brickwork work well and the contrast of the wooden seat too, but the discarded newspaper really completes the scene giving it a powerful sense of life deserted. The bold colours work well too. This looks like the same day you took ‘woman texting’ ? You are continuing to develop your creative vision well Marcel keep up the good progress. |

Most appropriate choice of subject for the challenge Janine. Nice strong diagonals and repeating shapes in the reflections, a very effective composition and nice low key exposure. Given the nature of the subject with its plain surfaces perhaps a cloud-free sky may have improved it further |

I can see why you were drawn to this subject for the challenge. There are some lovely repeating patterns in the boats, the rigging, the decking. It̢۪s just such a shame that those poles disrupt the full potential of your shot but obviously there̢۪s nothing you could do about them. Take a chainsaw with you next time! |

Congratulations Gin Tay on your commendable score and placing. This is a lovely image that fulfils the challenge brief very well. The simplicity, the diagonals, the lighting they all make a major contribution to create a very effective pattern image that has impact. |

Indeed this was a challenging exposure without a tripod but you certainly managed to get a good exposure. I like the rim lighting on the couple but would prefer a closer shot of just the couple it would have had more impact, I find both sides of the scene distracting. |

Well, I don̢۪t think this challenge was ever meant to be taken seriously was it! You must have thought mother nature was having a laugh with all that unexpected snow, as such this is not one of your greatest entries but probably suitable for the challenge. I hope your maple continues to give you pleasant surprises. |

Grab the sunby kaiyangComment: Hello from the critique club
An unusual image that contributes to the free study challenge
I can see why these unusual structures are considered to be iconic and why you have timed your shot to coincide with the suns position in relation to the bowl. I have to be honest and say that this just doesn̢۪t work for me, I think its probably because of the conflict of the natural scene surrounding these strange structures arising from its growth, the two, for me, just do not belong together they leave me feeling rather uncomfortable that they are there at all. The other thing that detracts is the over-saturation of the colours, it is a natural scene with unnatural structures that feels unnatural. Sorry I can̢۪t be more positive Yao but do please keep your entries coming. |

What a lovely avenue of trees. I̢۪ve got to be honest Janine, whilst I like the composition I̢۪m really not sure I̢۪m liking the overall feel. On one level I feel intrigued by the ephemeral feel it conveys of a magical woodland avenue but on the other stricter observation of the same scene I want to see a sharper more natural looking result so I really am torn between the two. |

I understand your comments about the challenging lighting Srikanth, you̢۪ve done well to control it the way you have. You have got a good exposure with plenty of detail in all areas, well done. This is obviously one very clever man there can̢۪t be many pilots who can also work on their own planes as he is here. I like your mono processing there is a nice range of tones throughout. A very pleasing image that was worthy of more recognition than it received. |
