Imperfectby moviemanComment: You know, this is sick. Never-the-less, there is a gallery somewhere that would love it. Just not me. I'd rate it lower, but it has definite backlighting, detail and contrast. Where's the printing that says, "Danger: Do not place over your head!" ? |

Sunlight thru the leavesby GrandmaEMTComment: Hmmm... I really don't know where to go with this one. I can see a certain abstract quality, even modernistic bent to the image. But, there's something lacking in general appeal to me. It's not composition or balance, that seems to be there. There is backlighting. Maybe its because I try so hard to focus all the time with my bifocals. Sorry. Good luck with the other raters. |

Summer Splashby davehugeComment: I think my major problem with this image is that it's so busy. The bright colors in the background are distracting. It also is hard to tell if we're getting side light reflections or any real "backlighting". I assume the cropping is because it allows you to concentrate on the sculpture and not on its base. I would have loved to see the tip of the top fin against the plain background. That would have helped some. Anyway, the glass itself has nice reflections and is focused properly along the side of the body and the front of the fin. A little more DOF might have brought out the tail, too. Maybe a black backdrop would help? Those are my thoughts - others may disagree. Good luck with the challenge. |

Sea Mermaidby dirkjan_denelzenComment: Neat image, but it really lost the detail - at least from what I can see. Maybe with less "brights" and a little subject and foreground dodging it would appeal more. Just my opinion. Others may disagree. Good luck. |

Backlightningby ajschelComment: Lost almost all of the detail - makes it very silhouettish (if that's a word and spelled correctly). Possibly needs fill flash? Others may disagree. Good luck with the challenge. |

Still life in a pond.by arminComment: Maybe it's the muddy colors, possibly the uncomfortable feeling one gets looking at the sun in the water, but I am not drawn to this image. It IS good that it catches the ripples and that there appears to be some depth to the water, but it needs something more to make it attractive - maybe brighter green tones, possibly more detail in the reflected leaves, even less specular highllights. Because of the reflection rather than light from behind, it's also questionable whether it meets the critera of "backlighting". Good luck with other raters, though. |

Ms Finityby TSaylorsComment: Backlighting, sidelighting - they exist, but as for pose, detail and general appeal as an artistic image, it just doesn't rate very high on my personal preference scale. The pose is more of a lackadaisical position and requires something to add tension, form and beauty. There is a conflict, too, between the really bright area along the side of the arm and the total lack of detail in the upper chest and head area. Others may disagree, and probably do. Good luck in the challenge. |

wanderfull lifeby sameh18Comment: There just isn't much image at all which shows on my screen. No way to tell what it is and whether or not it complies with the challenge. Sorry. |

Backlighted umbrellaby jimsappComment: I know you are telling me with the title that this is backlit, but the hands and face are so light that it would be possible to accept that all the light was coming from the front of the image. Never-the-less, I think it is a really fine image with great contrasts, detal and focus. I also like the cultural aspects presented. Congratulations. |
