Colorado's Royal Gorgeby SandyPComment: Nice capture. Love the texture of the cliff in the foreground and the mountains in the back. It does give one a sense of scale. |

Last year's Loveby BriangellerComment: Critique Club
Nice picture but has a flat feel to me even though it appears to be on a circular object (i.e. Tree or poll). There are a few factors IMO that caused this. Lack of detail, I looked at your image histogram and notice that you had a lot of gray area coverage but the picture fell of considerably on the white end of the spectrum and some on the black end. A +10 of contrast would of helped.
You also took the shot a f/10 which caused the DOF to not shallow as much as it would have if you had taken it at f/2.8 to f/4.0. It would give you a shallow DOF as the tree/pole gets further away from the lens on the sides and in turn would of given the photograph a more dimensional feel.
You subject is nice and I feel meet the challenge. Great shot opportunity. If possible I would suggest a re-shoot with a large aperture (2.8 -4.0) and don't let the trunk take up the complete picture. Choose your composition wisely with the tree off the right letting us see the DOF.
I hope this helps and wish you great success in future challenges. If you have any questions feel free to contact me via PM.
regards,

students at cross on retreatby bjh0705Comment: From the Critique Club
As I look at your photography the first thing that stands out is that it is not technically sound. I think you could have taken the shot from a different POV and it would have helped the composition but the lighting has a lot of blow out areas that are distracting, especially in the facial features of the students. The overhead lighting was too strong. The focus is very soft and I think it your shot would have been focused sharply on the cross (showing the rugged texture) it would of would of had more an impact.
With that said if you are trying to show Gods love for us through the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, you did meet the challenge. There is no high love than that!
In conclusion I have noticed that this is just your second challenge. Don’t get down on the scores, focus more on taking the pictures that you have emotional ties too. But while doing so don’t forget the technical aspects and you will begin to see you’re photographs come to life with emotion.
I wish you the best in future challenges.
