Didiby RoosterComment: A truly beautiful study. Soft all through out with great colors. I would have gone a a tad higher to avoid the other earring showing or would have cloned it out. It still remains one of my favorites. |

Ponderousby dagills22191Comment: A very delicate study and expertly photographed. Being that it exudes that traditional looks, like the early paintings I would have prefered a simple gown without the drawings. |

The Ballby newkdesignComment: From the Critique Club:
Not a fixed rule, but it is better to have selected an image with more color so that desaturation has its play.
For this picture you could have simply put a color ball and you are finished.
The composition is nice but not at all exciting because the texture is a constant and the subject too simple. Perhaps a broken bat or a tennis racquet would have added more interest.
Yet as a straight composition study it shows you have good judgment in making the best out of 3 items, the road, the line or crack and the ball. I am sure you will score higher as you apply this technique to other comcepts. The saturation is too rich, but this is a matter of personal taste. With less saturation it can pass into the semi-abstract class. This happens to us all, we select a concept and we die with it. The important thing is to go out and tackle the next challenge. dan Message edited by author 2004-06-30 19:49:58. |

Fading Historyby Resusit8uComment: from the Critique Club:
This is a shot which retains value ourside of the challenge. It is that of nostalgia. It is also historical whether one smokes or not. Yet there are some people that will pass it up because of their brain-washed attitude towards smoking and will vote you down out of their aversion to cigarettes. The composition is nice and my minor compain is that there is much more texture here, but the conversion to grayscale is just a hair weak. One effective way to do a grayscale is to convert the image to grayscale and then back up to RGB. You then employ curves on each different channel to achieve your end. However, this is not that critical since the picture stands on its own with enough detail.
Now, about the desaturation. First remember that you selected a difficult subject because it is old and delapidated, meaning that colors must be added in their most washed-out form. So, the yellow is too strong in the POUC. By weakening or reducing their saturation, it will all fall together. However, I think the image will look more vintage in a straight b/w rendition. Added proudly to your collection. Message edited by author 2004-06-30 19:23:48. |

Demolition of old memories - The Asbury Storyby graphicfunkComment: This is a shot of a forty foot wall which was the last one standing and due for demolition by end of this week. It was taken with natural light on an overcast afternoon. 50 years ago, these drawings were adorned with neon. This is the place Bruce Springsteen made famous in one of his songs. He was born here in Asbury Park. The place is being razed to the ground, ending the Asbury legacy. I realize this picture had no meaning to those not familiar with the story. However, it is a true story and the end of an era which served as a resort to many families. Thank you. |
