A very creative accomplishment. This picture holds the eyes attention and the silhoette against the black makes the purple stand out in all its glory.

From the Critique Club:
First: this is a beautiful action shot. The composition is fairly nice as is. Arguments could be made about the crop, but you captured the start and the end of the cloud. To bring the plabe closer would mess up your resolution. The way it is it gives the viewer a majestic and vast sense of the subject. All in all, I believe you should have gotten a higher score, after all, the main objective is the quality of the photography.
Well, not so. When you enter a challange, mainly the photographers will pin you against the wall if you image is good but it is misnamed. I am certain outside voters could not really care because they have no stake in the pretext under which the picture is taken. They just want to see exciting and colorful photography.
You should then consider giving as much care to the title, in this case a headline, as you do to the picture. However, must of us are not copywriter and we all fail miserably at times. I did so myself because I chose a famous playland that was being demolished and I used the headline, "Demolition of Old memories." Of course, if you lived near Asbury Park the news was readilly understood. But outside of this geography it is meaningless.
So keep up the good work and give the spirit of the challenge more attention. dan Hey: I can take this advise myself.

From the Critique Club:
Okay, this is a sports action shot and as such we are at the mercy of the available lightand of course the swift movement. The image has pleasant colors, but contrast needs a boost. The image is not in dead focus.
Of course, the dynamics would change in your favor had you waited to catch him at the end of the swing. This would have added more excitement. As a matter of fact many sport photographers shoot this on drive mode.
Another thing you can do with this picture as is, is to crop it like a baseball card.
The one lesson you should learn from this effort, is to resolve the focusing aspect. Learn the knack of prefocusing and then waiting for the action, but if much movement takes place do not hesitate to refocus.
By looking at your port I can see that you are well capable of focusing your camera, so all you need is a couple more visits to the arena. You will learn that a different mind set is required for different situations.
