Besides uptown and downtown there is motion and rest, focus and blur, light and dark, hatless and covered, bald and not. I think the challenge has been well met. The photo has a lot of appeal for me as well as my eyes keep going to the interest that the man with shoulder strap and hat is showing in the uptown sign. Excellent composition and exposure.

I guess I fail to see the opposite. Sorry. As to the picture itself, the ice and griddle do not appear to have great photogenic qualities.

I like that the leopard is showing such keen interest in us and the eyes and nose are so clearly portrayed. I also like the colors other than black and white that appear. The bottom of the rear paw invites a full body portrait, yet the depth of field alllows little more than a head and shoulders.

What I see is two weathered yellow arrowheads one pointing toward us and one away on rather nice pavement whose color and texture goes well with the yellow paint. The way the arrow pointing toward us has worn provides an animal like ears, eyes, and nose of a dog or wolf like creature. To the left is a nicely photographed well lit nicely focused pine cone. I find some but not much appeal in this image. A 5.

Comment:
Your title implies you find both balance and the lack of balance in this composition. Same patterns give balance. Different colors, sizes, and lighting provide a lack of balance. I like that the crosses are not vertical and they both point in the same direction. I just do not see anything near 150K of pixels in this picture. A 4.
The Game

Comment:
The blues in the darker chess pieces come off quite well. I like the streaks of light and shadow off reflective surfaces coming from an unseen window. I wonder what rules this game has and wonder what kind of game it is. The depth of field is necessary to keep the pieces and the board in focus, but the wood surface on which the board lays does not have sufficient appeal to support the focus that is placed on it.

I look forward to entering an 180 degree rotated picture soon. Cropping away the pavement would make this even more intriguing. The bricks on the bottom of the reflecting pool superimpose a very interesting texture on the entire scene. and the ripples produce their own wonderful distortions especially on the darker building and the sky. I guess the question is not whether you want your magic explained or not, but rather does the pavement add beauty to the picture or not. For me, the answer is no. An 8.

I guess this is a wall covered and uncovered by ivy. A little less glare off the leaves would help. Polarizing lenses, less aperture, shorter exposure, time of day can all be changed to reduce glare at time of capture. Not much can be done after the pixels have become oversaturated. The colors and lighting on the wall make a very lovely picture. A 5.
