I used a Sigma 20 mm f/1.4 on a D850, which is a Hoover for light.
Depending on your camera/lens, start with the lens wide open, ISO 1600 to 3200. Shutter speed, use the 500 "rule." Divide 500 by your focal length to get the longest shutter speed possible without stars being streaks, not distinct dots. Which I did not follow. Take lots of shots, zoom in with live view to see stars in your exposure, and just fiddle around.
