.....at the heart of things......by LuciemacComment: I'm enjoying being part of the DPL First ten! side challenge. Yours is photo #6 in my random voting stream for the Rule of Thirds VI challenge.
So, I'm wondering if the main bubble/subject is the first to leave, or last to arrive? Can't get more Rule of Third-y than this. Good lighting, focus, exposure (perhaps too bright on the lower right?) and a consistent effective color palette. |

The subject is so big relative to the frame that it's hard for me to see how the rule is applied here. I think it might be more effective moving a step or two back to create more breathing room at bottom, left, and top. There's also some distraction in the changing colors (shades of green, redish brown, white) in the background. |

Overshadowedby DebCComment: I'm enjoying being part of the DPL First ten! side challenge. Yours is photo #4 in my random voting stream for the Rule of Thirds VI challenge.
A good example of using the rule of thirds. The sailboat immediately stands out as the focal point. But, the scale of the boat compared to the cave may confuse the issue of which subject is intended to dominate. What a great looking location, though. Makes me want to be in the boat. |

Obviously following the rule here, which works to bring my attention to the center circle. Unfortunately, the focus and exposure at that spot aren't as good as other parts of the image. |

Follows the rule as far as I can see. Eyes are tack sharp, and shallow DOF works to isolate part of the subject. Nice bokeh and colors. Wish the abdomen and thorax were better in focus, but hard to do in macro without focus-stacking. |

Very interesting shot, with a sense of abstraction and concrete at the same time. The patterns on the wall immediately caught my attention in a good way. The emphasis of the bright white areas brings attention to the right side and specifically the boulder. Then... the bird appears from out of the background and its placement by the rule of thirds locks it in as the primary subject. Fascinating eye movement getting from the reveal to the bird. Cool. |

A truly captivating image. Shadow and girl created a horizontal division of three, with dappled, rippled light in between. Definitely got my attention in a good way. |

Intriguing use of the rule here, with two separate attention points in diagonal opposition at the intersection points. It works on one level, but also creates an interesting tension between the cat's eye and the flower. The front leg bridges the gap as a leading line, but it still feels visually unsettled to me. The exposure and background are exceptional. |

Totally Chillby dwyllieComment: Greetings from the DPC Critique Club:
I realize that this is late in coming, but Critique Club members have been backlogged with current challenges and recently got caught up enough to go back a bit in the request queue. I voted in this challenge and gave you a 9. Absolutely loved this shot. It's at an unusual angle and didn't immediately give itself up as a bottle and cap. Once that became clear the technical excellence became even more apparent. Amazing sharpness and detail, perfect strobe technique and spot on exposure. I don't think I can tell you a thing that would make it better, or would explain your lower end votes. Maybe chalk it up to a commonplace subject that was easily identified, and therefore not abstract enough. Who knows. It's a great photo. I'd be proud as heck if I was behind the lens. Kudos. |

The Blobby OK-PhotographyComment: OK,
From the DPL Critique Club: This is a strong entry for the Abstract in Green challenge. I had no idea you could get this type of effect with just water and cream. Very nice. What I like is the randomness of the submerged form. It tells an interesting story about the fluid dynamics. While the background yellow blends well with the green, I wonder what a more contrasting color might have done here. Finally, the shapes in the background are effective, but they appear to not be symmetrical from left to right. This may be a result of the mass of cream being larger on the right and obscuring the background. I do like the color gradient change in the background, your gel use was effective in creating this lighting pattern. |
