Lighthouse Silhouette

Lighthouse Silhouette

Comment:
I suppose that a case could be made for calling this a silhouette, but it still seems like quite a stretch. The hotspots on the underside of the railing and platform are distracting. Since advanced editing was allowed on this challenge, burning these areas to tone down the effect would have helped.

I'd have found this more interesting if the pose were either a bit more dynamic or more visibly stationary. Without the title I'd have spent more time wondering whether he was standing on one foot or moving than I would have enjoying the shot. The low-hanging dark clouds over his head add a nice mood to the image, but dodging the cloud subtly to create more visual separation / better tone difference between him and the cloud would have improved the shot as well.

I realize that you probably didn't have time to try alternative executions of this shot, but I'd be interested in seeing this with a slower shutter speed (just slow enough to blur the rotors and not introduce any strong motion blur due to it's direction of travel).

The contrast in this photograph is too high for my taste. Although the most prominent characteristic of a silhouette is the absence of shadow detail, I think that the slight shades of grey around the edges of the subject are important too. The contrast here is so high that the highlight on the upper lip and eyebrow are the only reasons for me to believe that this is two people and not a piece of cardboard blocking the light. I like the pose, but the implementation could have been stronger.

The silhouette seems like an intrusive element which was only included to make this otherwise dramatic photograph meet the challenge. Although the sunset is quite good, it's so saturated that it looks fake.

I like the background, but it looks so good that it seems fake. I'd actually be more impressed if there was some flaw that encouraged me to believe that this image was attributable to nature and not Photoshop.

It looks like you dodged out a lot more of the shade behind the woman's bust than was necessary. The angle of her head conveys a feeling that she's looking hopefully toward the future.

I find the few dark specks in the sky distracting. Since advanced editing is allowed, cloning these out would have been a good idea. As for the subject: the tops of the trees are the only part that's readily distinguishable from the other shadows. Shooting this from a location closer to the base of the trees would probably have allowed you to use more of that bright spot in the sky to frame the trees. Although the jet trail adds a point of interest, I think that framing the tree in a mode dramatic way would have given you a single, stronger subject rather than the tree + jet trail combination.

I like the veins in the leaf, but I would have preferred to see the bug's shadow a bit darker.
