Nothing Doing

I don't see boredom in this photograph. The bright colors work against you here, suggesting that the mood is rather light. I can't see the smoking man's eyes, but his posture and the angle of his head suggest that he's concentrating intently on something, not bored. The DOF is decent, but I'd have preferred to see a blurrier background. The water bottle on the left is somewhat distracting.

The background is needlessly busy; a shallower DOF would have made this a cleaner shot. The b&w and grainy texture was a nice choice, as was the all-black attire. The sloppily-worn hat conveys a sense of ennui, but the facial expression seems more staged than sincere. The chin-in-hand pose does convey boredom, but it's rather trite; since you don't re-introduce interest by shooting it from a novel angle or anything, it's roughly as interesting and original as a frowning face in a "sadness" themed challenge.

Doing dishes may be boring, but this picture doesn't depict boredom. The scene is rather cluttered, which typically is a bad thing in a photograph.

I can't figure out how this is supposed to portray boredom. Is the whiteboard bored? The pens? That paperclip, perhaps? The items depicted are rather common / boring and don't offer any real interest.

On the technical / execution side: The picture, the camera, or both were slightly off-horizontal when this was taken, so the writing surface appears to be higher off the ground on the right side than the left. Normally I wouldn't consider this a flaw, but when the shot is as minimalistic as this, every little detail counts. The focus is a little bit soft and the brightness &/or contrast could use a boost. I'm guessing that you trusted the camera's meter to get the correct exposure for this scene. When shooting something against a solid color like this, consider the meter a rough guess at best. One of the assumptions that all digital cameras (and film development machines, for that matter) make is that if all of the colors and brightness levels in the scene are averaged, the result will be a solid grey image (this is called the "grey world assumption"). In practice what this means is that if you set your camera to fully automatic mode and take two pictures, one of a solid black wall and one of a solid white wall, both of pictures will appear to be of the same solid grey wall. Because your picture consisted largely of a solid white surface, your camera adjusted the brightness level down toward grey.

This was one of only two images in the challenge that made me laugh. Nicely done. Did you try any pictures with the old guy in the background holding the CD toward the camera with an excited look on his face?

I would have titled this "Santa during the off season".

The stuff in the windows is a bit distracting; you may want to try a shallower DOF.

Why the fisheye effect and odd camera orientation?
