I should add that I was listening to an author (and expert) of a book on trees speaking the other day. He was telling about aspens. Apparently, aspens have a very extensive root system underground that covers in some cases many acres. The root system sends up more than one tree trunk - in some cases many trunks or living trees. One such system that researchers found in Colorado had a root system that they estimated to be 80,000 years old. It had sent up a small forest of aspen trees....
