I like this shot a lot, but it doesn't seem Westony to me. I think this approach has promise and is certainly a creative way to try to capture the Weston spirit. As much as I love the intensity gradient on the edges of the Tronesque smoke, it evokes the sense of depth that Weston seems to flatten out into abstraction. Whether or not the trailing/weaker edges of the smoke are in focus, they seem out of focus, again defeating what I think Weston would strive for in this shot. Finally, I don't think the form is the star here and it doesn't lend for ambiguity. The smoke itself automatically lends itself to abstraction, so it can't be abstracted further. A tighter crop may have tricked the eye into seeing something else, and that's where I think this type of approach could have some Westonish promise. As is I think it misses that mark.

Thats exactly what I thought. I felt this image should have done much better in the challenge
