I think it's the owner, not the breed. Really cute shot and the soft light works well here. My eye is drawn a bit to the grass due to the intense color. If it were cropped off it keeps my focus on Pickles.

Your first attempt at RAW turned out well, I think once you get used to it you won't go back. You've captured a lot of detail in his fur and great tones. One great thing about raw conversion is the ability to edit at 16 bits, which makes quite the difference if you make a lot of edits. Just another thought on the composition/angle, it appears you go down a bit on his level, and when I shoot these things I will try at many angles and see what works, although you may have done that.
