Crepuscular Dawnby
hughletherenComment by digitalknight: Greetings from the Critique Club!
I feel calmer already, your photo has an amazing calm serene feel to it.
Let̢۪s get right to the details!
Composition:
So many sunset shots are just that, the sunset sky itself (or sunrise in this case) So bravo for including some interesting lines to look at.
First the horizon is not spot-on center vertically! Thank you for that! The vertical rule of thirds here adds so much to this composition.
I also love the diagonal line rising up from the right to meet the horizon line. What is it about triangles that add so much to a composition? I don̢۪t know, but I̢۪m really glad that one is there.
But if that was the only foreground element it would feel oddly off – but you’ve covered it by including that terrific stone in the foreground center/left to pull the composition back to the left and leave it perfecting balanced. I love the texture on the top of this foreground element – I can almost feel it as I sit on it to watch this beautiful quiet time in the morning.
Lighting:
Lighting compliments of God! Streaming sunlight is such a beautiful thing. Kudos here to you for an excellent exposure. Your notes on processing show amazingly little of it, so you just flat out nailed the exposure. That is darn impressive. The hint of the sphere of the sun through the clouds is icing on the cake – a glimpse of the light source itself, without blowing the exposure around it – leaving just the right amount of white to add to the terrific tonal range of this work.
If it were a perfect world:
At least according to me, I’d lose the bird, or I’d make two or three more. Just one looks like a mistake at first glance – of course you soon realize that it isn’t, but it serves as a distraction. If there were more I think my eye would recognize them for what they are sooner – but none would make it a non-issue all together.
Still, overwhelmingly a terrific example of nature̢۪s beauty expertly exposed and composed. This is terrific work worthy of display in any professional forum. I would be proud to have something this beautiful in my portfolio.
