I'm not quite sure who is inside what, looking out at what. Unless I mistake it, the photographer was outside the fence (hence the distant animals inside it, as well as the watering trough). But the animals are so far away that it seems doubtful they would be looking out.

The foreground of this is crisp and clear; the lighting there is nice, with the tradeoff that the sky between the hills is a glaring white, unfortunately. The overall scene is charming, and including the water trough (rather than making it a simple pastoral) is nice, in the sense that it makes the scene very "real".

I like the colors and the smoke. This is certainly a desolate place. Seems a bit pixelated.

I thought that the green in the background destroyed the feeling of desolation, however, I played with the image in PS and removed the green and it really enhance its feeling.
