feels a little cramped in the narrow composition... good strong shapes for a duotone image.... nice high key also... = 6

Hello from the Critique Club, Harvey!

I'm delighted to have the pleasure of doing a CC on this picture of yours. I've been through your portfolio and have really enjoyed your work. :)

Composition:

Flowers are a favourite subject for many photographers because they are colourful and beautiful, but the trick becomes to shoot one in a way that says more than "this is colour and beauty" and I think you did that here. I like that the orchid fills the frame, and becomes an invitation, almost sexual (from your Mae West title too), but still very gentle. This is like a picture of the fragrance of a flower, and I really like it for that reason.

Colour and contrast:

The colour is beautifully saturated without any "blown out" parts and the contrast is nicely defined. My only beef is the grey bit behind the flower, it does nothing for our subject and I adopt bod's good suggestion that some green way back and out of focus would have served well here.

Focus and lighting:

I have no complaints about either the focus or the lighting here. I like the DOF, its subtle and complementary to your subject without making us feel like we're being poked in the eye by a flower. :) The lighting is bright without creating any harsh shadows..all in all, very well done!

Overall and my impression:

Despite the "complaints" about too many flower pictures, I never tire of them, and I think this was a very effective shot. I really liked it, and it is well deserving of its placement and score! :) I look forward to seeing more of your work. Happy shooting!

I really like the interesting and unusual tones here! Red seems out of focus compared with green, when it seems like they should be equivalent.

A humerous idea - well done (this is the leaning tower od Pisa technique, yes?) You did the lighting well enough that it looks very convincing

I like this very much. The colors are very clear and the structure of the ball-shape ads more interest and depth to the picture. This image is an example of how simplicity works for an image, and of how much there reálly is to see in an image that looks simple at first site. I hope it scores well. Regards, Marco.
