very eye catching and looks like someone stepping out for the night but I think pavement would be better as the concrete says to me stepping out on the driveway anyway a 8

Great shutter speed, colors, and composition. I love the little lit up flowers in the foreground!

This photo begs the question..."What is that darling child afraid of?" You captured a unique moment with a lot of emotion and unanswered questions.

This was one of my highest votes cast in this challenge. I thought it had country written all over it. Maybe if you had sepia toned it; that seems to be what makes winners here of late. I'm kidding of course about the sepia. It's a beautiful shot as is.

Thanks to all those who took the time to comment!

I actually did experiment with a vertically-oriented crop of the barber/boy on the left... the problem was the arm of the barber on the right was still in the frame (unless I cut off the boy's shoe), and it bothered me, so I went with this shot instead.

I was backed into the corner of the barber shop and had a pretty limited area in which to shoot. Two other things were working against me in this relatively small space: the 1.6X crop factor of the 10D, and my lack of a real ultra-wide-angle lens (my widest is 24mm, or almost 39mm on the 10D).

this tells a cute story, but I think the little boy and his barber is all that was needed. still a neat scene, and nice choice to make it b&w.

B/W works well for this shot. You might experiment with a different, more unusual point of view to increase the drama, but this shot works well for me.
