WHAT I LIKED
The texture of the log/tree.

PROBLEMS
Starting with the ocean view - about the right 1/3 of that part is close to being blown out. The water itself has very little detail and kind of mixes with the bland sky.
The tree/log - The knot (top left) is really dominate, and should have been left out, the root system is mostly in the shadows and a different angle would have really helped.
Overall - there are to many distractions to allow this photo to work. There is a lack of ANY contrast which doesn't help either.

[b]SOME SUGGESTIONS[/b]
A different angle, like from the top of the tree down to the water, might have helped. Another idea would have been just a bit of the trunk, and all of the root system (metering for the roots - might have to take a couple shots and combine them to get some detail in the water)

Your using some of the best equipment out there for photography, just have to work on the techniques.

Imo the angle and composition here isn't very strong... but I know from experience that shooting trees (or any long skinny object, for that matter) is extremely difficult. Try experimenting unusual points of view and angles. Maybe try getting farther away from the tree as well, and see if that works.

What a beautiful bird! I can see why you cropped it as you did but I think cropping up from the bottom by a bit would be better for the overall image. I know you didn't want to lose any of the tail feathers. It's a tough decision to make and it's totally yours. I like it!

Nice bokeh, just a touch grainy, but that doesn't bother me. The beautiful pastels of this bird with the excellent capture of it's feather textures override all other sins. Very nice.

An incredible shot (for me at least), as the DoF makes one believe this is a macro job, yet the awesome bird doesn't look like it is glued in position... I hope you share the details. (not voting).
