Nice shot, but your angle you took was the most typical (i.e. pointing the camera downward).

Greetings from the Critique Club.

The Dr. Seuss book actually used silhouettes, not shadows, but this is close enough. And the distortion caused by the low angled light does make it rather "Seussesque". So it certainly meets the challenge for me (although voters who never read that book may disagree).

I do wish the shadow was darker, with sharper edges and with advanced editing this would not have been difficult. And I agree with cpanaioti that a vertical format would have been better. I do like the textures and lines in the field. The way they arc around the shadow is very nice, framing the subject rather than distracting from it.

But frankly, the shadow just isn't that interesting. Arms and hands (perhaps from an assistant standing behind you) and distinct legs would have helped. Spiky hair would have been great, but tough to pull off in a shadow. A second person's shadow would also have added interest, although that would have made an entirely different photo.

Overall, a great idea here; it just needs a little more fun!

Greetings from the Critique Club -

I took a quick peek down at your comments recieved for this image. I was curoius as to what was left and I am pleased to see that you recieved some really good and well thought out comments in challenge. You actually got some amazingly detailed comments that I wholeheartedly agree with. Without going into too much detail the background issues, th epaper layout and use of DOF and the in general flat feel of light and colors are all reasons this scored low. And overall it just doesnt hold alot of interest.

Play around more with your editing, look over high scoring images and study what they have and do that grabs the interest of the viewer. Keep working at it and playing and your scores will go up.

Hang in there Michael. You are young and will learn fast. I expect that I will be commenting on your 6+ scoring images soon enough.

Greetings from the Critique Club -

Well, your description of your entry helps explain the issues I have with this image. This is basically straight from camera and it has that feel. The colors are flat and the lighting is just ok. Soft in focus too. It just has no dynamic feel to it at all. It is just a snapshot basically.

Without going into everything I think you could have done, a minimal amount of post processing - levels, saturation, sharpening - could have really brought out some interest in this image. As it is though its just not much to look at. It doesn't hold my interest long enough to want to look at it for longer than what it took to hit a number. And unfortunately for this shot, thats what DPC requires for the higher vote. Play around with your editing, experiment a bit and see what you come up with. You could have scored higher here.

This image lacks interest. Just a photo of a shadow isn't really enough to convey seuss and it's a really flat image... literally and figuratively. Something to try might have been having random object either in the grass or coming off of the shadow, like branchs or rooftops, etc.

Definitely fits the title and book; the uneveness of the background distracts me somewhat from the shadow.
