I keep bypassing this one 'cuz I'm not sure about it, but it's growing on me. I spent half my life in close proximity to Chicano culture, and something about the mood here rings very true. It's interesting you've chosen to title the image with the Character's Name rather than the title of the novel, but it's not an issue for me.

I like the tones and the softness of it. A good response to the challenge. 6.

i like the hazy quality of the image, but find the plant too distracting. upon viewing this in the thumbnail view, the plant seems more natural.
a 6 7 from me

I never heard about this book, is it a classic?
The image reminds me of odriew way of treating a subject. Gentle, calm and filled with emotion, a little formulaic but mostly sincere. It is lovely and has a great deal of peaceful sadness. If this is the case, you certainly achieved to communicate it.

Hmm. So what about this says "writer" or "poverty"?

She does have a book, so I suppose that's not miles away.. Also, I think she looks more asian than latina.

Processing here is going to have its fans, no doubt. I'm not one of them. :) I like crisp details on the face in a shot like this, and the overall softness isn't doing it for me. Nor do I love cross-processed images.

With that being said, composition is good (wish her arm was more or less visible), and the image does have a reasonable impact.

5 for coming close, but missing the mark.

I'll give this a 10. Because I like it. The style. Its personality. I am not familiar with neither the novel or the character so I did a bit of search. and I like it more. Big fan odriew!

A beautiful picture, cropping most of the right side would maybe make it a little less cluttered. As Esperanza dreams, hopes, and plans are symbolized by a house I don't get that here, but I do get her introspection, youthful lamentation and a yearning (I suppose to leave Mango Street). A really good effort.8.

Don't know the book but based on its synopsis this image seems a suitable representation of the young protagonist. The image is interestingly composed with the inner framing by the plant, but the crop at the bottom abruptly slices off her hands - an unpleasant effect. The foggy effect is a bit overdone at least for me because it robs the shot of any clear focus and leaves viewers like me constantly trying to focus our eyes. A sharper focus on the face or at least her eyes could save it. All in all, a creative attempt but overdone. 5

I like the colors and soft feel to this, but it may be a tad too soft. The plants covering her chin distract a little. 6

Imaginative, Intelligent... this is a thoughtful delight of an image and one of my highest votes in the challenge.
