flamable liquidby timboydwhiteComment by HBunch: *Critique Club*
First thing I notice is that the focus seems really soft here. Obviously a low lighting shot, and I think that is making the focus a bit soft here. Better to set the camera down on something, and use the timer if your camera has one. That way, you can avoid any camera shake at all. Could help save the focus that way.
Also, while there is a CAN of liquid in the shot, we really can't see the actual liquid itself.
I do like how you have the flames in the glass. I tink that's a really cool effect. Makes for an interesting shot for sure. it's a little bit too bright in the center of the flames, but I think it doesn't harm the photo much if at all.
The angle and framing/cropping are ok. I disagree with the comment about removing the can from the photo. Without that can, the shot really doesn't fit the challenge at all. Even with the can, it's a bit of a stretch. Definately keep the can, but do put it on a solid background. I think that had it been all black, without the light colored area, the flames could have stood out on a total black background nicely. Especially if it were showing through the glass a bit.
Overall, just needs a bit of sharpness.

Composition - This looks like a shot that might've been better from a few feet back. The little motion blur isn't too distracting, but not being able to see what the performers are doing is. Definitely get the idea of the sound stuff though. The percussion instruments in the front I'm sure are drumming out something thru the low buzz of the semi-interested crowd. Just guessing of course. It's difficult to visualize what the guy, who we can only see about half of, is doing.
Technical - I mentioned some motion blur. With the shutter speed around 1/100, it's easy to get motion blur and even easier with a handheld shot. Unfortunately that's not a good thing in this case. The exposure is pretty good. No real noticeable problems with the DOF and the editing looks minimal.
Overall - If you would have been able to capture a little more of what the performers were doing, I'm quite sure it would've helped your cause. The people in the front with their instruments were crucial to the challenge topic so they would still have to be fairly prominent to remain on topic. I think the idea is really good, I just don't know how easy it was to execute this picture. I'm sure if you were a little farther back, you'd be trying to take the picture through people. Well take care and good luck - Bob |

flamable liquidby timboydwhiteComment by qachyk: Hah, excellent idea. Unfortunately, this more concentrates on the gaseous element than the liqiud one, but I will concede it is not OFF-topic.
I think a bit more focus on the glass and flame would have been better. You could have set it up so the lighter fluid container was still partially visible and let us realize what it was; giving it equal time detracts a bit. Maybe by setting it back a few inches and moving the angle slightly? |
