Shapes from Candle Lightby JLCComment by Citadel: Greetings from the critique club!
Interesting approach to the challenge. The effect you were going for works fairly well. Lighting is pretty decent and composition is okay. To cut to the chase, the technicals are fine here. Perhaps a little more depth portrayed in the shot would be nice but otherwise its alright.
Unfortunately with this shot, there's that wow factor missing. As mentioned in the previous comments, more candles might help. Perhaps moving the candles around and spacing them out and placing them at varying distances from the camera may help. You've composed using the rule of thirds which is fine. Try it also in the third dimension as well. You could also try different levels for variety. (A black hockey puck as a stand might allow the change in levels without being noticable in the scene)
Previous commenters mentioned changing the background. Maybe but I honestly like it the way it is. Your eye is drawn to the star patterns.
Potentially you could have closed your aperture a fair bit and used a shorter exposure time to try to get just the stars. (Just an idea though.)
Overall, I like the fact you were trying to be creative with your topic. Keep the ideas coming! |

Flowersby JLCComment by Jedusi: Jerry, lovely flower. I wonder whether a slightly squarer crop, and perhaps a border would give this another look again ?
Would you mind if I tried ? |

Kyrsten by JLCComment by Melethia: This is my favorite of the three - the composition is excellent, following the rule of thirds with both the placement of Kyrsten (who's a very lovely model!), the horizon, and the setting sun and it's reflection on the water. Even the clouds cooperated and are placed wonderfully in the frame. Very nice work! |
