RE_ from your post:

I don't think it did bad at all, you didn't come in last place but in the middle which is a huge thing for a free study.
I was not able to vote on this one, ran out of time, but this would have been a 5 from me, with the free study being so huge anyway and everyone entering it doesn't help much.
To me it was just a person standing there with a camera, nothing wow about it to bring me in to say hey awesome portrait.

As for technical, I can not tell you what was wrong with it and I don't see anything that really comes off really, really wrong.

For portraits for me to give 6-10, I love seeing a more blurrier background and in an interesting place or have an interesting background. I am not attached to the person or what is going on, but its a nice image.
I really like your photos and how you do things so don't be to down on this, your doing better than I am :-))

Added, You have "that eye" and have what it takes, I look forward to your images!

I'll comment on the first thing that pops out at me. The subject is the child, but the road leads you out of the image and it's out of "balance." The top left is very dark, the bottom right is very bright and that high contrast does nothing to create the mood of the image. He looks like he's chilling out, which to me would want low contrast to aid in the mood I think you're shooting for.

I guess the question would be, what story are you trying to tell with this image?

Much better. The only remaining nit for me is the back of the bench. It's so bright it's the place the eye goes to. I would selecting and fiddle with levels a bit to bring it down a couple of notches.

I think cropping would help, and I agree with the b/w

i'll echo Johanna. its like its trying to be two different images.

Overall nice mood. I would crop out the top 1/3, and definitely needs more depth.

Front focused by just a bit. Had you nailed the eyes you would have nailed a 9.
