Lighting lighting lighting. On-board flash has absolutely wiped out any sense of texture - lighting from the same direction as the camera is inevitably going to do that, and in this case it's not even too much fill, it just appears to be the sole source of light here. because of that, this communicates little sense of texture.

Would have centered this a bit more or got rid of the blue thing in the B/R corner. IMy eye finds the blue distracting.
