You almost got it. This is one of the situations where a DSLR has the flexibility to allow you to focus on the subject that you want, or to select the area of the image to focus on in the viewfinder. The camera focused on the little branch in the foreground in this shot.
Like you said, not the best photo, but it is a nice snapshot to share what's going on around your home.

Really, really nice in greyscale. Very nice light and composition, and he stands out perfectly. He looks a bit contemplative in his little bower.
