The color of the cheese puff stands out nicely against the blue/grey background. However it is not a very interesting shot. It reminds me of when I was in high school photography class and I had free black and white film I would go out and shoot cigarette butts on the ground. I never got good grades from those photos... barely above a D. Why did I do that?? Because I was't very creative and the subjects were readily available.

did you wake him/her when the shutter clicked? maybe less body and offset that with a little more space on the left side; ie., not centered but just off center

I understand loving a pet; but just showing the object of one's love doesn't actually communicate that love photographically. It kind of looks like you massively lowered the highlights or massively raised the shadows. I can't tell which.
