There's a lot of noise in this - I suspect it was cropped from a larger pic? Also, the halo around the bird points to oversharpening. Did you try converting to blk/wht - it might have made the noise look more like film grain.

Stephen, this is such a wonderful photo. I had saved it a while back as a favorite because, well, it is your best photo in my humble opinion and I wanted to have something as a reference point to remind me to follow your illustrious career. But now I'm looking at it again and I can totally see you have much better photography skills then you show in the challenges, yes, I read your goals for 2007 and I understand we all need something to focus on. Unfortunately this image has a lot of noise and the focus and clarity are not good at all. A very difficult shot to try and capture and well done for trying.
