This is a little off the wall, yes, but I would say it definately fits the challenge.
I do think that the lighting is a little low on the fossil. Maybe some kind of either side lighting, or lighting from the top would helps the little ferns to stand out a bit.
The focus seems a little soft as well. Maybe it's just the texture of the rock, but the little ferns don't seem to be very crisp.
The comment that this is a copycat pic is a bit rediculous. What shot ISN'T a copy cat pic? You have put an object in front of words, and that's pretty common, but I see nothing wrong with that.
The angle and framing/cropping I think works for this shot. You were able to get both the definition and the rock in the shot, and show adequate amounts of both.
This doesn't grab my attention and hold it, but it isn't bad either. I think that the rock was probably difficult to get both lighting and focus because of the texture and bumpiness. Still a good interpretation however.

Nice photo. These little guys are so difficult to photograph. I can see how this could relate to Home Sweet Home, but unfortunately, in my opinion, it fails to protray the place you call home. =1

This fits the challenge nicely. The red/green combo is nice, and the idea is creative.
The lighting looks a bit muted, like the lighting conditions were not ideal for this shot. It does make this seem a bit flat and lacks the depth I think it needs to stand out at us. Not that there really IS much depth, but some sun or something (but not too harsh) would help in my opinion.
Also, the focus seems a bit soft. It seems that there is a sharper focus in the upper right hand corner, and then the rest is a bit soft. It is really obvious if you look at the cracks in the tiles.
I do also think that a different background might have helped out some too. With the texture (cracks) in the background, I think that they take away from the texture of the leaves. Creating a bit of a distraction. There is that one crack that cuts all the way through the leaves. going from the upper right to the lower left. Cutting objects in half, even if from 'behind' bothers me for some reason.
I think that the idea is good. Quite interesting, and effective. Just a few minor adjustments and this could be great.
Oh, I will also mention that the seeds are a distraction in my opinion as well. I think that with the total green/red theme, the little white/yellowish ones really stand out more than anything, and on top of the cracks in the tiles, really take away from the image.

I think you need to boost the contrast to make the black darker and the white lighter. At the moment they both look like muddy grey.

An interesting take on the now well-used refraction trick. The whites aren't quite white though, unless by the title you just mean the shot has been converted to greyscale. I find the corrugations in the glass detract from the shot, as they make the straw look chewed (the scoop on the straw doesn't help either, IMO). The light shadow to the left of the glass disturbs the symmetry too. I think the composition is pretty good otherwise, however. Maybe with some level adjustments and a darker piece of black cardboard, it would be more punchy. Now that I look at it, you can see the cardboard coming up a bit at the bottom of the shot.

Hmm, honestly I think I would have liked this better withOUT the straw. The refraction just looks very odd, probably the more so because of being in B&W -- it actually looks like a separate object completely (including in that it looks like a Twizzler underwater).

The shot is a bit angled to one side but besides that I like how everything is 'so opposite'
