Sky & Telescope ~ Eclipse of Sunby ladpupmoeComment by HBunch: Took me a minute to realize that the thing in the center was an 'eclipse' and not just an annoying glare. I still find it to be a bit distracting from the telescope, which I find to be much more interesting. Focus and clarity look good. I think it's a nice shot to be on a magazine. light glare to the right is a bit distracting, expecially since the sun's suposed to be all covered up by the eclipse. :) |

Erupting Paper Clipsby ladpupmoeComment by qachyk: Run for your lives!
Heh. This made me smile -- definitely funny. I'm actually not sure if I like it with the tape dispenser but mostly I think because that's the brightest colour in the photo -- maybe if it were a bit more of a muted tone. The eyes keep going to there away from the 'action' of the shot. |

It is so quiet you can hear a pin drop.by ladpupmoeComment by inspzil: Greetings from the Critique Club

Composition - I think this is a very good idea. I don't really like the mirror though. There are times and places for mirror shots and I don't happen to like it on this particular picture. That's just me. Black is a necessity to the background though for good contrast with your subject. Good choice here. What I think this needs to make it just a little better is a little motion blur. And maybe instead of the mirror, you could've put something that looked pretty hard and dropped 3 pins on it like there is in the picture here, then dropped the 4th with the shutter a bit slower to show it moving.
Technical - I don't know how easy it would be to change the shutter speed on your cam, but the motion thing would've been good. There are always a couple things you can do to fool a camera into taking the shot you want. Also you could take the pic when its a little closer to the surface its about to strike, its simply moving faster there. The framing seems pretty good and the exposure is ok. The one thing that is pretty rough about this picture is all the noise around the pin. That is a bit troubling.
Overall - I think you had a good basic idea. The little touches like not using the mirror and trying to get a little motion blur would be more helpful conveying your idea without having to put so much in the title. I'm not sure what's causing your noise either. I wish I had the answer. Hope this could be a little helpful or a solid alternative for next time. Good luck - Inspzil |

Erupting Paper Clipsby ladpupmoeComment by inspzil: The roll of tape is not really helping things in the picture. This might have been better if you didn't show the bottom of the cup, or the bottom of the screen behind it. You really lose the illusion of the paperclips in motion knowing that the screen is immediately behind the cup. If we couldn't see that at the bottom, it would be a better sell. Its a good idea, and this picture would've worked if you cropped off the bottom. I know why you didn't (the paperclips on the table), but I think weighing out the pluses and minuses, it would've been more conducive to cut it off |
